Synopsis

Led by Suryakumar Yadav, Team India clinched the T20 World Cup with a decisive victory over New Zealand in the Ahmedabad final. After posting 255/5, fueled by fifties from Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan, India's bowlers, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah's 4/15, bowled out New Zealand for 159.

Team India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, successfully defended the T20 World Cup triumph with a 96 -run victory over New Zealand in the high-stakes final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8.

After posting a solid total of 255/5, thanks to Sanju Samson's 89-run knock and brilliant fifties by Abhishek Sharma (52) and Ishan Kishan (54), Team India bundled out New Zealand for 159 in 19 overs. Jasprit Bumrah led the bowling attack with figures of 4/15 at an economy rate of 3.80 in his spell of four overs. Axar Patel contributed with three wickets while conceding 27 runs at an economy rate of 9.00.

Apart from Bumrah and Axar, Hardik Pandya (1/36), Varun Chakravarthy (1/39), and Abhishek Sharma (1/5) chipped in with a wicket each, ensuring New Zealand never recovered and sealing a dominant win for India in the T20 World Cup final.

For New Zealand, opener Tim Seifert led the run chase with a knock of 52 off 26 balls, including 5 sixes and 2 fours, at a strike rate of 200. The second-best performance was by skipper Mitchell Santner, scoring 43 off 35 balls. Except for Seifert and Santner, other Kiwi batters failed to build partnerships or make significant contributions, falling cheaply under pressure and allowing India’s bowlers to dominate throughout the innings.

Bowlers Contemplate Batters' Effort

Indian batters, including Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Abhishek Sharma, as well as Shivam Dube, who scored an unbeaten quickfire cameo knock of 26 off 8 balls in the middle overs, powered India to a commanding total on the board, putting New Zealand batters under pressure early in a 256-run chase. The Men in Blue's bowling attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel, capitalized on the pressure and dismantled the opposition's batting line-up.

New Zealand had a shaky start to their run chase as they were reduced to 47/3 in 4.5 overs after Axar dismissed Finn Allen (9) and Glenn Phillips (5), and Bumrah removed Rachin Ravindra (1). The Black Caps' batting further collapsed to 72/5 after the dismissals of Mark Chapman (3) and Tim Seifert.

However, Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner weren't willing to give up without a fight, even though the defeat was inevitable, as the scoring rate was relentlessly high, leaving little room for a comeback. The pair formed a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket before Daryl's dismissal at 124/6. Thereafter, Santner carried on New Zealand's innings, hoping that the visitors would at least post a respectable total.

However, in the 16th over, Jasprit Bumrah was brought into the attack and picked up two back-to-back wickets of James Neesham and Matt Henry to reduce New Zealand to 141/8. Thereafter, Mitchell Santner's stay at the crease ended after he was dismissed by Bumrah at 152/9.

When Team India needed 97 off 7 balls to win the match, Abhishek Sharma dismissed Jacob Duffy, who was caught out by Tilak Varma at the long-on boundary line, , effectively ending any slim hopes of a New Zealand comeback and sealing a commanding T20 World Cup final victory for India..

India Create History at Ahmedabad

Along with a commanding victory over New Zealand in the final, Team India scripted a historic feat at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Men in Blue became the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup triumph, having previously won in the 2024 edition under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.

Team India became the first team to win three T20 World Cup titles, having previously won in 2007 and 2024. Additionally, India scripted another history by becoming the first-ever side to win the title on home soil, thrilling the fans at the Narendra Modi Stadium and etching their name even deeper in ICC T20 World Cup lore.

Team India's triple achievement at the T20 World Cup 2026, winning back-to-back titles, securing a record third T20 World Cup crown, and lifting the trophy on home soil, cements their status as one of the most dominant sides in the history of the format.
