NGT diesel vehicle ban: Motor strike in Kerala on 15 June

Synopsis

The Motor Vehicle Industry Protection Committe has called for a strike in Kerala on June 15 to protest the National Green Tribunal's (NGT) order restricting diesel vehicles of more than 10 years old.

Auto rickshaws, taxis, buses, trucks, vehicle dealers and work-shop owners will participate in the dawn to dusk stir, the office bearers of the committee stated.

Last week, a Special Circuit Bench of the NGT ruled that light and heavy diesel vehicles with a capacity of 2000 cc and more than 10 years old will not be permitted to ply in  cities in the state including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur.

The ruling elicited a huge public outcry and the Kerala High Court put a partial stay on the NGT judgement. The LDF government has sought the legal opinion to explore ways to counter the possible impacts of the NGT order.
