Centre’s nod for 6 IITs, including Dharwad

Synopsis

 

Setting up of these IITs are said to have national significance and approval has been granted under the ambit of IT Institutions Act 1961, the official statement said.

 

The decision was taken to upgrade Indian School of Mines (ISM) of Dhanbad to an IIT. The Union Cabinet had also approved the establishment of National Institute of Technology in Andhra Pradesh.

 

The Union Cabinet in its recent meeting approved the amendment to the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 to facilitate incorporating of new IITs.  This amendment will help upgrade the ISM Dhanbad into an IIT by bringing it into the purview of Indian Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.
