The trade unions must not come in the way of those who want to work on strike day, Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) has said ahead of the all-India strike on 2 September.
It is for the government to ensure that the fundamental right to work is not taken away from citizens, Commission chairman Justice J B Koshy said.
"Right to strike is a legal right, but right to work is a fundamental right and no one should be stopped from exercising it. The state government should make necessary arrangements to make sure that people who wish to work should be able to reach their workplace," he said.
Strikes have caused innumerable miseries to citizens and the government should take steps to prevent this. Courts have done their part, Koshy said.
The five-year term of Justice Koshy as the head of KSHRC ends next week. Chairman said he is leaving the Commission happily as in his position he was able to provide justice to several people, especially weak people of society.
