Dalit student from AP alleges ragging in Kerala University

Synopsis

Rajesh Babu, a student of Kariavattom campus of University Of Kerala  alerted Vice Chancellor, National Minority Commission and UGC anti-ragging helpline. Following an inquiry, a PG student was suspended. The action came after the University Registrar conducted an inquiry into the complaint.

A dalit student from Andhra Pradesh alleged ragging and mental harrassment by senior students at the hostel of Kerala University at Thiruvananthapuram. 

 

Rajesh Babu, first year M.Sc. bio-informatics at the Kariyavattom campus of University of Kerala, filed a complaint with Vice Chancellor, National Minority Commission and UGC anti-ragging helpline alleging ragging by senior students. 


Following a probe conducted by the University Registrar, Rahul G Dev, a second-year student of MA Linguistics has been suspended by the Vice-Chancellor . A few other senior students will also face disciplinary action.


Listing down the torture methods meted out on them, Babu said that some senior students used to continuously harass new comers at the University’s men’s hostel.


While some students left the hostel fearing ragging, Babu went ahead and lodged a complaint with the authorities.
