Bengaluru: Summer makes beans costlier than chicken

Synopsis

A kilogram of beans now cost ₹180 in Bengaluru as bad weather causes a drop in the yield. With demand for this vegetable remaining high, the price of this veggie has crossed the kilogram cost of chicken, ₹180 against ₹160 for the chicken.

Though one would imagine that this rise in price benefits farmers, this is far from the truth. As a winter vegetable, yields for beans are always been depressed in summer. But the unusually high summer of 2016 have driven yields even lower, causing large losses to Karnataka farmers.

Local sources claim vendors are still buying the beans at a lower price and re-selling them at inflated rates prices.
