Should a woman sacrifice for marriage? This story will change your mind

Synopsis

Getting married is considered to be a milestone in one’s life Often, the onus is on the woman to make all the changes and adapt But, what happens if a woman does not want to get married? A recent Twitter post went viral when a man posted a heartbreaking story of his classmate

Being a woman in India certainly comes with a whole lot of expectations and a number of roles that she’s expected to fulfill -as a single woman, as a daughter to her parents, as a sister to her siblings, and a friend to her peers, and as a wife and daughter-in-law to her husband and his parents. Independence and the Indian woman is a bit of an oxymoron, and can a woman truly do what she wants and desires without being heavily scrutinised under society’s giant microscope?

Getting married is considered to be a milestone in one’s life.  But, what if a woman doesn’t want to? Growing up in India, women are not necessarily given an option to say ‘no’. More often than not, societal and parental pressure to get married takes a toll, and the woman eventually gives in or resigns her fate that is a one-sided compromise.

This man’s impassioned plea to empower women and allow them to have the freedom to do what they want – and in this case – be financially independent, and free from the clutches of society’s judgement went viral on Twitter.

Usman Ghani decided to tell his classmate’s story because he strongly believed that it had to be told, and serve as a well-meaning cautionary tale in a series of tweets.

His tweets not only addresses the women but their parents as well.

He even calls on all parents to see reason, and raise them as a person and not a commodity.

Ghani hopes his message will give women the strength and perseverance to not crumble under society' s judgement, especially when they are at the end of their tether, and resistance may prove to be futile. He hopes that through his classmate's story, it will give women their voice back to be heard loud and clear.   Besides this, he also has a message for parents' as well - to raise their sons better.
