Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) is reaching out to former employees, including workers impacted by its recent large-scale corporate layoffs, to staff open positions across its artificial intelligence and cloud-computing divisions, according to internal recruiter emails obtained exclusively by Business Insider.
The initiative highlights how the technology giant is leveraging its alumni network as it races against rivals such as Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), Meta Platforms (META), OpenAI, and Anthropic to secure scarce artificial intelligence and machine learning talent.
In one email to a former employee, a recruiter in Amazon’s AI agent organization explicitly encouraged the individual to explore new openings. The message referenced an outreach push titled "Swami's Boomerang Reengagement Initiative."
"A lot has changed since you were here, and there's some really compelling work happening across AI/ML right now," the recruiter wrote.
The outreach spans multiple groups within Amazon AWS. In a separate instance reported by Business Insider, an AWS Finance recruiter offered a former employee an expedited interview track that led directly to a job offer.
The recruiter also inquired whether Amazon’s strict return-to-office policy had played a role in the employee's original decision to leave. Industry analysts and prior reporting by Business Insider have noted that Amazon’s five-day in-office requirement and geographic hub constraints have created hurdles in attracting outside tech talent, with candidates occasionally choosing rival firms offering greater remote flexibility.
Responding to the report, Amazon spokesperson Haley Silva confirmed to Business Insider that former employees are eligible for consideration when open roles align with their skills.
However, Silva emphasized that the practice is a standard, company-wide procedure rather than a new project created specifically for AI or cloud divisions.
"We're always interested in connecting with talented people — both new candidates and former Amazonians — for open roles," Silva said in a statement.
Silva added that outreach is dictated strictly by open headcount needs and denied that the effort aims to counteract departures caused by workplace attendance policies, adding that the company’s return-to-office expectations remain unchanged.
The rehire strategy comes after significant workforce reductions at the company. Amazon has cut tens of thousands of corporate positions over past restructuring cycles, including reductions in its artificial general intelligence team to reprioritize core goals.
Rehiring former staff, often termed "boomerang hiring," has grown increasingly common across the technology sector. Data from payroll processor ADP indicates that returning workers make up a significant share of tech hires, as alumni require shorter onboarding periods and bring institutional knowledge that helps organizations scale complex AI projects quickly.
Retail sentiment on Stocktwits was ‘neutral’ with ‘normal’ message volumes.
