Your normal looking green and yellow pineapples could seen receive a colour makeover if Del Monte has their way. The fruit was first seen on Instagram and came with a rosy hue. Del Monte Fresh Produce has been working on this new variety of fruit since 2005, and was given the go-ahead by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last December to commercialise them.
Now, Del Monte and Dole have teamed up to grow the pink pineapples in Costa Rica and Hawaii— and some enterprising Indian might soon just bring it to our shores. Till then enjoy the pictures of these of beautiful fruits
The pineapples get their tint on both the inside and outside by adding lycopene, the substance that gives tomatoes their ruby-coloured skin and makes watermelons pink. The new species Ananas comosus has been given the more consumer-friendly nickname of "Rosé." However, in stores you'll see it listed as "extra sweet pink flesh pineapple".
