Guru Purnima is a religious festival celebrated each year on a full moon during the month of Ashada (June-July). This special occasion is marked by paying homage to a teacher who has inspired a spiritual journey. While people on social media are abuzz with special messages for their teachers, they also witnessed a tweet that was rather unusual. NASA's official account for earth's moon acknowledged that millions of Hindus, Buddhists and Jains will celebrate the full moon this weekend.

A tweet by the NASA Moon account read, "Full moon this weekend - called Guru Purnima, Hay Moon, Mead Moon, Ripe Corn Moon, Buck Moon, or our favorite, THUNDER MOON." This one tweet excited Indians on Twitter and they responded with a short and sweet "Thank You." This is the first time that NASA acknowledged the Hindu festival and several Indians felt humbled by it.

Guru Purnima is celebrated differently in various parts of India. Some people touch the feet of their gurus, offer a pooja and fast throughout the day. However, Guru Purnima is also celebrated in several schools with special functions held in honour of the staff.

Even though this day is a recognition of a teacher's significance in our lives, this guru can take several forms. Nowadays, people also send special messages to their parents for being role models and a source of inspiration.
