Millenials often get a bad rap for being unprofessional in the workplace. According to Fortune, they are seen as being, “lazy, entitled and narcissistic in the workplace.”
Unlike the Generation X crowd, who are seen as more traditional in their approach to work, millennials differ on how they work in a set-up.
According to hbr.org, “A 2015 national study commissioned by CNBC echoes these results. Looking at the importance of six traits in a potential employer — ethics, environmental practices, work-life balance, profitability, diversity and reputation for hiring the best and brightest — CNBC found that Millennial preferences are just about the same as the broader population on all six.”
Here are three ways where millennial can shine in the workplace
Holocracy: Hierarchy is common in traditional workplaces where a lot of emphasis is placed on one’s title. Although a lot more organisations, particularly, start-ups, have a more flatter organisational structure. Through this, millennials feel more included and want to make their voices heard. They want to have conversations and discussions with senior members, and be a part of the decision-making process.
Impact: Millenials want to make an impact at the workplace. It’s what the company can offer, and not just monetary terms. They want to be connected with the companies goals and visions more so than the Gen X.
Recognition: Feedback and appreciation are a must for millenials. In fact, it’s almost become a norm, and this goes beyond appraisals. Recognising employees fuels them harder, and they become more motivated.
