BJP national vice president Mukul Roy’s cases transferred to regular bench in Calcutta high court

BJP national vice president Mukul Roy was relieved by the trial in a special bench of the Calcutta high court for MPs and MLAs accused in criminal cases. A single bench of Justice Vivek Chowdhury on Monday (September 28) heard 12 cases of financial fraud and deception against Mukul Roy. But the allegations against him were lodged after he resigned. As a result, the special bench dismissed Mukul Roy’s cases.

Kolkata: BJP national vice president Mukul Roy was relieved by the trial in a special bench of the Calcutta high court for MPs and MLAs accused in criminal cases. A special bench of the Calcutta high court had already been constituted in the wake of the recent order from the Supreme Court to hear criminal cases against MPs and MLAs.

A single bench of Justice Vivek Chowdhury on Monday (September 28) heard 12 cases of financial fraud and deception against Mukul Roy. But the allegations and complaints against the former Rajya Sabha MP were lodged after he resigned. As a result, the special bench dismissed Mukul Roy’s cases. As a result, the hearing of the 12 cases against the BJP leader will be heard by the regular bench from now on.

Before joining the BJP, Mukul Roy was in the Trinamool party. Apart from Railway minister portfolio, he also became a Member of the Rajya Sabha. But after he resigned as an MP in 2017, complaints were lodged against him in many police stations including Jagddal police station. Mukul was accused of embezzling millions of rupees in the name of getting a job in the Railways. He also got anticipatory bail from the Calcutta high court.

However, on the direction of the apex court, Chief Justice of the Calcutta high court TBN Radhakrishnan constituted two special benches to hear the cases. A division bench headed by Justice Jayamalya Bagchi and Justice Shuvra Ghosh and a single bench headed by Justice Vivek Chowdhury. The single bench heard the case on Monday (September 28).
