Rafael Nadal has been out of action since his French Open 2021 semis loss to eventual champion Novak Djokovic but would take part in Washington Open, ahead of the US Open.

Spanish tennis great Rafael Nadal is all set to return to action in the ATP Tour circuit, as he would be taking part in the Washington Open (ATP 500 series) starting this week. It would mark Nadal’s first tennis stint in two months.

Nadal’s last competitive tennis outing was at the French Open in June, where he lost in the semis to eventual champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia. Following the same, he had decided to take a break citing mental and physical exhaustion, missing Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics. It would also be Nadal’s first hard-court stint this year following the Australian Open in February.

“I am very excited to come to Washington for the first time. I have never been there, and it’s one more place I wanted to come and play. I am looking forward to playing again, and Washington shall be the best start for the US summer swing for me,” Nadal said in a statement.

Nadal would look to perform in Washington to the fullest as he eyes a successful stint in the US Open. Having won record 13 titles at Roland Garros, the US Open is the next best Slam for him, having won four titles.
