The actress left her studies midway to become an actress. Deepika had joined Mount Carmel in Bangalore but never completed her studies there. Later, she also enrolled for a short-term course in IGNOU for further studies, but could never finish it.

In 2007, IGNOU's registrar Srikant Mohapatra had told PTI about Deepika's admission. He said, "Deepika is a student of BA course in IGNOU since 2005. She has opted for sociology as her major with economics as a subsidiary subject."

Mohapatra also added, "She has appeared in five papers at the end of the first year in 2006. She has done well in the exams." Deepika's subjects were Sociology, where she studied about, Study of Society, Society in India, Sociological Thought, Society and Stratification, Society and Religion and Social Problems in India.

In an event, Deepika talked about her education. She said,“Even my 11th and 12th, I struggled to finish. I was already a very successful model, and I was based in Bengaluru but I had to keep travelling to Delhi and Mumbai for work. I couldn’t keep up. Then I ultimately finished my 12th and I tried to do one year of my degree. I couldn’t do that, I then tried to do distance education, I couldn’t complete that as well so I’m just a 12th pass."

Deepika's parents, Prakash and Ujjawala Padukone, reacted as any middle-class family would. “My parents back then had a big issue with that because they always wanted me to only start working after having a basic college degree. The very conservative Indian way of looking at it is that you need to have something to fall back on.”

On the work front, Deepika has a good line-up of films like The Intern remake, Shakun Batra’s yet-untitled drama, Pathan and Fighter in her kitty.
