Bengaluru: As the cricket world continues to pay tributes to former India captain MS Dhoni who retired from international cricket on Saturday (August 15), here is a suggestion from a BJP Rajya Sabha MP asking the legendary cricketer to fight the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

On India’s Independence Day, Dhoni chose to bow out of international cricket. However, he will be back in action next month in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) from September 19 to November 10 in the UAE.

The 39-year-old Dhoni, one of the greatest captains of the game, will lead CSK in IPL. The matches will be played in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shifted the tournament abroad amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Dhoni has led CSK to two IPL titles. Many are speculating that this year’s Twenty20 tournament could be his last as a cricketer.

Many former and current cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, have paid rich tributes to ‘Mahi’. Apart from cricketers, politicians too have hailed Dhoni’s contribution to Indian cricket and the why he has motivated youth.

BJP MP Subramanian Swamy took to the micro-blogging website Twitter to hail Dhoni’s inspiring leadership. And, he said Dhoni should join politics and contest the 2024 general elections.

“M. S. Dhoni is retiring from Cricket but not from anything else. His talent-to be able to fight against odds and his inspiring leadership of a team that he has demonstrated in cricket is needed in public life. He should fight in LS General Elections in 2024 (sic),” Swamy tweeted on Sunday morning (August 16).

Swamy praised Dhoni in his tweet.

Dhoni is the only captain in cricket history to have won all the three ICC trophies (World T20 2007, World Cup 2011 and Champions Trophy 2013)

So far, Dhoni has not revealed his future plans. Now, he is in Chennai preparing for IPL 2020. He landed in the southern Indian city on Friday (August 14). Along with Dhoni, his CSK teammate Suresh Raina too quit international cricket.

The big question now is will Dhoni join politics?
