The IPL 2021 is off to a classic start, with defending champions Mumbai Indians succumbing to former champion Chennai Super Kings as we look at the records scripted in this tie.

It was not the best restart for defending champion Mumbai Indians against former champions Chennai Super Kings in Match 30 of the 2021 Indian Premier League at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. MI yielded a 20-run defeat, thanks to encouraging shows from CSK's Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dwayne Bravo. Meanwhile, here are the records that were attained.

Gaikwad scores the best
It was Gaikwad's innings that played a pivotal role in CSK setting up a competitive target. Consequently:
- It was also CSK's best innings by a player against MI, going past Michael Hussey (86*).
- He has also become the second-best scorer in the clash between the two, with MI's Sanath Jayasuriya taking the top spot (114*).
- He has equalled AB de Villiers of winning most Man of the Match awards (5) in the past two seasons.

CSK scripts an unwanted
Three of CSK's batsmen were dismissed for ducks. It was the third instance of two of the top-order batsmen getting dismissed for a duck.

Jasprit Bumrah enters the 100 club
Bumrah has completed 100 matches for MI. As a result, he has become the fifth player to enter the club after Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Kieron Pollard (MI), Sunil Narine (Kolkata Knight Riders) and Lasith Malinga (MI).

CSK scripts a unique
With the win, CSK is now only the second IPL side to win after batting first and losing its first four wickets for less than 24 runs. The other team to do so was Sunrisers Hyderabad against Pune Warriors India in 2013.

MI records an unwanted
Mi failed to chase a target below 160 for the second time since 2014, with the first being against SRH in 2019.

Match summary
Winning the toss, CSK decision to bat first did not go entirely well, losing its opening four wickets in less than 24 runs. However, Gaikwad's unbeaten 88 steered the side to 156/6. In reply, MI was going strong, but the CSK bowlers continued to gain regular breakthroughs, as Saurabh Tiwary's unbeaten 50 was not enough to save it from a 20-run defeat.
Brief scores: CSK 156/6 (Gaikwad- 82; Milne- 2/21) defeats MI 136/8 (Tiwary- 50*; Bravo- 3/25) by 20 runs.
