Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the founders of Rome, Romulus, and Remus. During this festival, young men would draw names of young women from a jar, and they would be paired for the duration of the festival, sometimes leading to marriage. In the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I declared February 14th as St. Valentine's Day, honoring two martyred saints named Valentine who were executed by the Roman Emperor Claudius II. Legend has it that one of the Valentines performed marriages for soldiers, defying Claudius's orders, which led to his martyrdom. Another story suggests that Valentine himself sent the first 'valentine' greeting to his jailer's daughter, signing it "from your Valentine," before his execution.
