Thala Ajith’s fans have even created a Twitter hashtag '#42YearsofKollywoodClown' to mock Ilayathalapathy Vijay, that too on his 42^nd birthday.

Fans are known to be fanatics and '#42YearsofKollywoodClown' is a perfect example of how they can create an illusion of a rift between Ajith and Vijay.

With more than 100k 'likes' for Ajith's fanpage, the hashtag trended worldwide.

However, Vijay retaliated with all its might on social media.

This online skirmish gave some Ajith fans a chance to post videos of themselves wishing Vijay on his birthday.

The rivalry between the fans of these acclaimed Kollywood actors dates back to 2007, when Ajith’s movie Aalwar and Vijay’s movie Pokkiri met head on at the box office and drove fans wild on Orkut - the preferred social media platform of the time.

Back then, Ajith’s fans had trolled Vijay with statements like “Aalvar first half is enough to beat Pokkiri.” But when the film flopped and Pokkiri was declared a massive hit, Vijay’s fans took wing.

Soon after, as Vijay's movies fared poorly (Azhagiya Tamil Magan received mixed reviews, Kuruvi, opened to Indian audiences after several delays and did not win people’s hearts) his fans quietened down. It took another couple of hits for Vijay’s fans to emerge out of their self-imposed hibernation.

Meanwhile,  as Ajith's Billa set the turnstiles afire, Vijay's fans were enraged and started trolling not just the actor but his family as well.

Ever since then, the gap between the fans of the two stars has just widened.

Both have tasted recent successes. Ajith has Mankhata, Billa 2, Arambham, Yennai Arindhal and Vedhalam to his credit, while Vijay has Thuppaki, Katthi, Puli and Theri to his.

While this hatred does not look like it will subside anytime soon, one hopes that the two factions can set aside their differences, at least momentarily.
