A family court in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on Bhojpuri actor and BJP MLC Pawan Singh on Saturday for skipping a hearing in his wife Jyoti Singh's maintenance case. This penalty marks a significant development in the ongoing legal dispute, with the court scheduling the next hearing for November 12.
The development marks the latest in a protracted legal dispute between the couple, which has been ongoing for approximately four years. Jyoti Singh initially filed the maintenance petition on April 22, 2022, following their marriage on March 6, 2018.
The recent fine of Rs 3,000 was specifically levied by a family court in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, due to Pawan Singh's non-appearance at the scheduled hearing for Jyoti Singh's maintenance case. Additional Principal Judge Kamalapati Prajapati presided over the proceedings. According to Singh's lawyer, Harivansh Singh, his client's absence was attributed to his mother, Pratima Devi's, illness. To substantiate this claim, a medical certificate from her doctor was submitted to the court, alongside an application seeking mediation. However, despite these submissions, the court proceeded to impose the fine, underscoring its insistence on adherence to judicial schedules.
The legal dispute between Pawan Singh and Jyoti Singh spans several years, highlighting a relationship that has dissolved into a complex court battle. The couple married on March 6, 2018. However, the marital harmony was short-lived, leading Jyoti Singh to formally file the maintenance case on April 22, 2022. This petition initiated the legal proceedings that have continued for over two years, with numerous hearings and legal exchanges shaping the public perception of their separation.
Jyoti Singh, who was present in court with her lawyer, voiced strong disapproval of her husband's repeated non-appearances. She accused Pawan Singh of making a mockery of the judicial process, stating, "The case was filed four years ago. There is a limit to one's patience. My life has been ruined." This sentiment reflects the frustration over the prolonged legal proceedings. Indeed, this is not the first instance of Pawan Singh facing penalties for non-appearance; court records indicate he was previously fined Rs 1,000 on two separate occasions in 2022 for missing hearings on September 9 and October 5. Beyond the procedural issues, Jyoti Singh has also made severe allegations of abuse and infidelity against him, claiming she was forced to undergo an abortion twice. She has consistently sought a substantial maintenance amount of Rs 10 crore, while clarifying that her primary complaint was for maintenance, denying any murder complaint against her husband.
The ongoing legal proceedings in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, underscore the challenges faced in resolving high-profile domestic disputes, particularly when one party's attendance becomes a recurring issue. The court's decision to fine Pawan Singh Rs 3,000 for his recent absence signals a continued commitment to ensuring the smooth progression of the case. With the legal battle now set to continue, the next crucial date is November 12, when the court will hold another hearing. This upcoming session will be pivotal in addressing Jyoti Singh's maintenance plea and advancing towards a resolution in a case that has captured significant public attention.
