Toxic Movie: Why Nayanthara First Said No to Yash's Film and What Changed Her Mind

But here’s a fun fact: Lady Superstar Nayanthara, who plays a gangster named Ganga in the movie, was not very excited to be a part of it initially. In fact, she first said ‘no’ to the project. Nayanthara’s first answer to ‘Toxic’ was a ‘No’!

In ‘Toxic’, Nayanthara plays Ganga, a gangster whose story is closely linked to Yash’s character, Raya. The film boasts a massive female star cast, including Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria, and Rukmini Vasanth, which grabbed a lot of attention from the get-go. However, Nayanthara didn't immediately jump on board. She only changed her decision after she understood how director Geetu Mohandas planned to shape the character and the film.

Speaking at the film's trailer launch, Nayanthara revealed that the team behind the movie was the main reason she finally agreed. She mentioned that Yash and Geetu Mohandas had a huge influence on her decision. Nayanthara was impressed by how Geetu envisioned the character of Ganga and the journey she wanted to portray. This was the key reason she ultimately agreed to join the film.

Nayanthara also spoke openly about Yash's dedication to cinema. “I have never seen an actor work as hard as Yash,” she said, praising his efforts for ‘Toxic’. She pointed out that Yash wasn't just focused on his own performance; he was concerned about the quality of the entire film. As a producer, he encouraged everyone on the team. Nayanthara added that Yash also gave his full support to director Geetu Mohandas during the making of the film. She also mentioned that his commitment to the movie even affected the time he could spend with his family and children.

‘Toxic’ also in discussion for its female characters

The film has sparked a lot of debate for its different take on female characters, sexuality, and consent. After the first teaser was released in June, some people on social media criticised it for allegedly objectifying its female characters. Director Geetu Mohandas seemed to respond to this through an Instagram story. She hinted that the film explores themes of female desire, consent, and how women navigate the system on their own terms.

After the ‘Toxic’ trailer was released, director Ram Gopal Varma also praised Geetu Mohandas’s work. He called her a “symbol of women's empowerment” and said he was surprised by some of the scenes she had created in the film.

A story set in 1980s Goa

‘Toxic’ is set against the backdrop of Goa in the 1980s. The story revolves around the crime, deception, and drug cartels operating in the underbelly of what looks like a tourist paradise. The film is directed by Geetu Mohandas and produced by Venkat K. Narayanan and Yash under the KVN Productions and Monster Mind Creations banners. It has been shot in Kannada and English and will be dubbed and released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam.
