WATCH: Shakib Al Hasan apologises for attending Kolkata Kali Puja event after death threats

Shakib Al Hasan is an all-rounder who plays for Bangladesh, having made his debut in 2006. He has also featured in the Indian Premier League, having represented Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He is married to Umme Ahmed Shishir since 2012.

Prominent Bangladesh all-rounder has seemingly landed himself in the bad books of his fans after attending a Kali Puja event in Kolkata. He even received death threats after attending the inauguration ceremony of a puja pandal, in the Kakurgachi area of Kolkata.

After pictures and videos of the same went viral on social media, he was slammed by some of his fans for hurting religious sentiments in Bangladesh. Furthermore, a guy named Mohsin Talukdar threatened to kill Shakib, as the cops arrested the latter in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

Nonetheless, Shakib issued an apology for the same through a video, stating "As a proud Muslim, I seek apology from you all, if I have hurt your sentiments. If you see the invitation card of the puja, you will know that I was not called for the inauguration. It was inaugurated before my arrival by Mr Firhad Hakim, a minister from West Bengal."

"Kolkata is like my home and I never miss an opportunity to visit here. We should all pray that relations between people from both sides stay strong forever. There was no intention to show my religion in poor light. Neither was religion discussed at the event when I was on the dais," added Shakib.

"I believe Islam is a religion of peace. I always try to follow every custom of Islam. Yes, we do make mistakes, but I try to learn from them in order to become a better Muslim. I just want to say, let's not do something which may divide our society. As long as we are united, we shall be powerful. We Muslims shall always remain united," Shakib concluded.

Shakib is recently making a comeback after serving a year suspension. He was handed the ban in October last year by the ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit after he had failed to report corrupt approaches by an Indian bookie.
