Synopsis

Mohammed Azharuddeen hails from Thalangara, Kasaragod and plays for Kerala in the domestic circuit, as a wicketkeeper-batsman. The 26-year-old is yet to feature in the Indian Premier League. Kerala won its opening game of the 2020-21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, against Mumbai.

Rookie Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, Mohammed Azharuddeen smashed records, as he scored a quickfire century against Mumbai, in the 2020-21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, on Wednesday. The 26-year-old smashed a century off just 37 deliveries, as his unbeaten knock of 137 allowed Kerala to win by eight wickets, in what was the side's first win in its opening game of the tournament.

Azharuddeen scripted some records with his knock:

  • He became the first batsman from Kerala to score a century in the Twenty20 (T20) format.
  • It is the second-fastest ton by a batsman in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
  • Also, it was the third joint-fastest T20 century by an Indian batsman.
  • It is the third-highest score by an Indian in the format.
  • He also helped Kerala register its first domestic win over Mumbai, across formats.

Azharuddeen hails from Thalangara, Kasaragod in Kerala and has been playing for his state in the domestic circuit, since 2015. As for his T20 stats, he has scored 404 runs in 19 innings at an average of 23.76 and a strike-rate of 144.80.

Match summary: Winning the toss, Kerala invited Mumbai to bat first, as the host put up a healthy total of 196/7, courtesy some adequate efforts from the top-order, while Aditya Tare was the top-scorer, with 42 runs. In reply, it was Azharuddeen's unbeaten 137 that played a pivotal role in the win.
