Steven Smith's troubled elbow casts doubt over his build-up to ICC World T20 and Ashes

Synopsis

Steven Smith is one of the best batsmen in world cricket across formats. He has been suffering from a troubled elbow of late. While he would be missing the Windies and Bangladesh tour, his preparations might take a toll for ICC World T20 2021 and Ashes.

Australian batsman Steven Smith proves his dominance in world cricket as one of the best batsmen across formats. However, he has been suffering having some elbow troubles, resulting in him missing the upcoming tour of Windies and Bangladesh.

Smith has had problems with his elbow earlier this year. He was out of action between February and March before returning to action during the Indian Premier League 2021 for Delhi Capitals in April.

However, it seems that the problem has resurfaced again. As a result, the Australian management is worried if Smith would require major surgery to get his elbow fixed, thus affecting his return and build-up preparations for the upcoming ICC World T20 and Ashes later this year.

"Unfortunately, I can't tell you how long or how serious it is, but it's something he's had before and definitely flared up again in the IPL. How long it will take to get it completely right I can't tell you at the moment, I've had no further advice on that, but the main thing is for Steven, from our view, is to make sure he is fit for the T20 World Cup and of course the Ashes," Trevor Hohns, Aussie national selector, was quoted as saying to cricket.com.au.

As of now, Smith would be looking to get his elbow healed without surgery. However, if things don't improve, he might be compelled to undergo surgery, affecting his IPL 2021, WT20 and Ashes participation.
