Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21: Cameron Green suffers injury scare after blow to head

Synopsis

Australians are taking on India in a three-day day-night warm-up tie in Sydney. Both the teams are off to a shaky start, while Australian all-rounder Cameron Green suffered an injury scare after being hit on the head by Jasprit Bumrah. Nonetheless, he seems fine for now.

The Australians have suffered a fresh injury scare in the form of all-rounder Cameron Green. He suffered a blow to the head on Day 1 of Australia's three-day day-night warm-up clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Friday.

It was while the pacer was bowling the first delivery of his seventh over, with Jasprit Bumrah being on strike. As the latter played a straight drive to a good-length delivery, the ball hit Green at the side of his head.

Green immediately went down on the ground, with the players, including the Indian batsmen, showing concerns. As the medical team was called for, Green was quickly up to his feet. Upon being examined by the team physio, he left the field and was replaced by Patrick Rowe as a concussion substitute.

"Cameron sustained a mild concussion while bowling for Australia A. This is Cameron's first concussion. He has returned to the team hotel and will not play the remaining two days of the tour match. We will continue to monitor him and provide an update on his condition in due course," updated Cricket Australia's (CA) team doctor, Pip Inge.

Australia are already without prolific opener David Warner, who has been ruled out f the opening Test, on December 17, owing to a groin injury. Also, fellow batsman Will Pucovski suffered a concussion during the first opening game after a blow to the head and is also doubtful.

Green is looking for his Test debut, having come off an impressive domestic season, especially in the Sheffield Shield. He also scored a century in the opening warm-up game, besides claiming a couple of wickets. In this tie, he dismissed Shubman Gill for 43.

Match summary: Winning the toss, Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane elected to bat first, as they were bundled for a paltry 129. While Bumrah scored an unbeaten 55, pacers Sean Abbott and Jack Wildermuth claimed three wickets each. In reply, the Australians, too, are off to a shaky start, as after dinner, they have lost five wickets just above 50, with seamer Mohammed Shami claiming three so far, while opener Marcus Harris has been the top-scorer, scoring 26.
Brief scores: India 194 (Bumrah 55; Wildermuth 3/13, Abbott 3/46) lead Australia 56/5 (Harris 26; Shami 3/25) by 138 runs.
