‘Will consider’: Rahul Gandhi says on ‘unanimous request’ to become party chief again at CWC meeting

The Congress Working Committee members on Saturday unanimously appealed to Rahul Gandhi to take over as the president of the party with elections for a full-time Congress President and a team of new office-bearers to be held in August-September next year, the Wayanad MP said, “he will consider”.

The statement from Rahul Gandhi came after several senior leaders, including the chief ministers of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, as well as former Defence Minister AK Antony, urged the Kerala MP to come back as the party chief.

Senior Congress leader Ambika Soni said, "all the members were unanimous that Rahul Gandhi should take over as president of the Congress party."

The highest decision making body of the party, the Congress Working committee has given go ahead to the internal elections of the party.

Responding to the request, Rahul Gandhi has said that he will consider becoming the party chief again, Congress leader Rajeev Shukla said.

“Very positive suggestions came from everyone. There is no dissatisfaction….The election schedule has been discussed…Rahul Gandhi has said he will consider the request to become new president,” said Shukla after the CWC meet.

Gandhi reportedly also said that he needs clarity at the level of ideology from the party leaders. Meanwhile, some leaders said that till the polls, he should be made the working president, ANI quoted its sources as saying.

Earlier the CWC met for more than five hours and deliberated upon the issues of organisational elections, upcoming assembly polls and issues faced by common man.

At the meeting, Sonia Gandhi also placed on the table the party's organisational election schedule before the CWC, with sources indicating that the process could be long-drawn and the elections to the post of Congress president will be held in September 2022.

Presidential elections will be held between August 21 and September 20, with block level and PCC level elections slotted for April 16-May 21 and July 21-August 20, respectively.

Sonia Gandhi was made interim president by CWC after Rahul Gandhi stepped down as the president of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) accepting the responsibility of humiliating poll debacle in the 2019 general elections.
