Public grievances that Namma Metro should address soon
The Bengaluru Metro now stretches 27 kilometres across the city and in the last three days since its first run, more than three lakh people have travelled by Namma Metro.
While Bengaluru citizens are all praise for the comfort and convenience the metro offers, some commuters believe a few primary concerns need to be addressed, at the earliest, to ensure a better travel experience.
We have compiled a list of grievances by Namma Metro commuters:
- Provide adequate parking space
Thousands of commuters travel to and from the metro by two-wheelers, cars but parking facilities are not available at all stations, this discourages people from using the metro.
- Connect the Railway and Metro
Around one lakh commuters arrive and depart from the Bangalore Railway station on a daily basis, but there is no internal link that connects the railway station to the metro; passengers, therefore, have to walk about a furlong to reach the nearest Metro station.
- Ticket counters to enter railway station
Metro train commuters who wish to cross over the bridge or take a train from the railway station cannot do so unless they buy a rail or platform ticket. These tickets, unfortunately, are not available inside the railway station. Commuters, therefore, have to take a detour out of the station, buy their ticket from the outside counter, and then come back to the railway station to board their train or cross the platform.
Railway authorities have said that they plan to open a platform ticket counter at the foyer between the railway and metro station; that should, hopefully, cut the long walk short.
- Porters and ramps to help the elderly
Kempegowda Metro station, that serves as a link between the main Majestic Railway station and Namma Metro should have porters or ramps to help disabled people or senior citizens with heavy luggage as they make their transition from the main railway line to the inter-city metro.
- Lack of sign boards
Commuters also noticed that the lack of proper sign boards confuse people. Commuters are forced to rely on security guards or metro staff to find their way in and out of the metro station.
- Lack of water and public toilets
In many metro stations, particularly in Kempegowda, Cubbon Park and Vidhana Soudha basic facilities such as drinking water and public toilets are not provided. There are toilets constructed at metro stations, but these are not open to the public.
- Make the metro more disabled friendly
Many commuters have complained that Namma Metro is neither disabled friendly nor convenient to senior citizens. The lift that is provided for their convenience is quite away from the platform. There are no seating arrangements for them on some platforms either.
Though trains do ply every 10 minutes, it may be quite difficult for senior citizens or the physically challenged citizens to stand these 10 minutes.
If the metro authorities do address these grievances soon, Namma Metro will see many more commuters on a daily basis.
