Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah's son Rakesh passes away in Belgium

The son of the Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah, Rakesh, has passed away in a hospital in Brussels, Belgium. The death occurred at around 3 pm IST.

The 39-year-old had been admitted in a critical condition to a University hospital in Brussels last week. He passed away from complications in his pancreas. Rakesh had been suffering from pancreatic and liver problems ever since he was injured in an accident 14 years ago.

The CM is currently in Belgium and was expected to return in a day. The CM is expected to return to Karnataka with the body of his son on Monday.

Rakesh Siddaramaiah had gone to Belgium to visit the Tomorrowland Fest-2016, accompanied by his friends. While on tour, he complained of acute stomach pain and was later admitted to the hospital. His condition later turned critical, and he was put on a ventilator.

CM Siddaramaiah had rushed to Belgium a day ago, along with a few officials and doctors from Bengaluru.

Treating doctors in Belgium said they would comment about his condition at the end of a 48-hour observation period. However, in the early morning (Belgium time) his condition worsened, and he was declared dead by evening.

Late last year, Rakesh reportedly underwent treatment for liver and pancreatic issues in Bengaluru.

Manjunath, a friend of Rakesh, said Rakesh was very much interested politics. However, his father had advised all family members to keep away from politics.

"After Rakesh was admitted his mother and brother, Dr Yathindra, rushed to Belguim to be with him," Manjunath said.

Rakesh was married and had two young children. While his son is studying in Germany, his daughter is studying in Bengaluru.

Further details are awaited.
