Kerala Police on Thursday raided the headquarters of Peace International Schools at Kochi on Thursday following its suspected links with some of the Islamic State (ISIS) recruits from the state. The sleuths said that the MD of the schools MM Akbar, a renowned Islamic orator with a sizeable follower base, ‘escaped’ to Qatar fearing arrest.

The Kochi-based school network made headlines recently after the National Investigative Agency (NIA) stumbled upon information that Mariyam, who was one among the 21 suspected ISIS recruits from Kerala, had worked as a teacher in the school.

The school also ignited controversy as it followed Islamic curriculum that exhorted students to lay down their lives for Islam. The police also suspected that the curriculum was drafted by persons close to Mumbai-based Islamic evangelist Zakir Naik. A FIR had been registered against the school for allegedly trying to radicalise little minds.

Police said that it had evidence to prove that Akbar was behind introducing the controversial text books in the school. The police team seized documents related to it.

When Akbar felt that his arrest was imminent, he left the nation. The police suspect the Islamic preacher is hiding in Qatar now. He escaped to Qatar immediately after the publisher of the textbooks was arrested in Mumbai last month, the police said.

Akbar is also the director of  Niche of Truth, a Kochi-based Islamic missionary organisation and a fiery orator. He rose to fame by organising inter-religious debates titled 'Sneha Samvadam' in which he invited leaders of all religions for an open debate on Islam.
