Congress leader booked for hate speech

 Police have registered a case against Kozhikode District Congress Committee president (DCC) KC Abu for making a controversial speech during an election campaign in Beypore.

 The case was registered following a complaint by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate KP Prakash Babu, alleging that Abu, in his the speech, incited communal sentiments aiming at the religious polarisation of voters in the constituency. 

The BJP leader had also filed a complaint with the Election Commission pointing out that the DCC president also violated the model code of conduct.  Based on the complaint, the commission had sought an explanation from the Congress leader.

Abu had allegedly stated that the constituency would get a Muslim MLA if the United Democratic Front candidate Adam Mulsi was elected from Beypore.

 

Abu had allegedly stated that the constituency would get a Muslim MLA if the United Democratic Front candidate Adam Mulsi was elected from Beypore. He was speaking at an election convention in Beypore on 7 April. He made the controversial speech in the presence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. 

The DCC president went on to say that the victory of Mulsi, would ensure that his rival candidate, V K C Mammed Koya of the Left Democratic Front, remained as the Mayor of Kozhikode City Corporation. Either way, the Muslim community will gain from the victory of Mulsi, the Congress leader had allegedly said.  

Koya, who is contesting on a CPM ticket from Beypore, is currently the Mayor of Kozhikode City Corporation.
