The night of December 16, 2012, will remain the darkest night in India's recent history due to the Nirbhaya rape case. This incident not only led to one of the biggest public uproars in the recent times but also forced legal reforms and amendment of Criminal Law.

This criminal act awakened the conscience of the nation, and from candle march across the country to cabinet meeting chaired by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, this incident touched everyone across all spectrum.

This brutal rape case, which does not require any detail to be disclosed anymore, involved six individuals who were found and arrested within 24 hours of the incident.

Ram Singh, was the driver of the private bus in which the crime was committed, and his brother Mukesh Singh were arrested in Rajasthan, assistant gym instructor, Vinay Sharma, and fruit seller, Pawan Gupta, and the juvenile offender Mohammad Afroz were arrested in Delhi, and the last accused Akshay Thakur was arrested in Aurangabad.

Where are these men (anatomically speaking) now after 4 years of this crime?

In 2013, was found guilty and sentenced to death penalty which was also upheld by the high court of Delhi in 2014. However, in 2014 Supreme Court of India stayed the execution and the Hon'ble court is yet to hand out its decision in this matter. On August 27, 2015, Vinay, Akshay, Mukesh and Pawan got convicted of robbing Ram Adhar and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

Ram Singh: The main accused of this Nirbhaya case, Ram Singh committed suicide by hanging himself in Tihar jail in March 2013. He hanged himself using his own shirt on the day when all the accused were to appear in Saket court.

Mohammad Afroz: This juvenile (at the time of committing the crime) was released last year in December, after completion of three years sentence in the juvenile reform home. His release again drew huge attention and public outrage, and it was seen as a failure of the legal system in India.

Before his release, the Intelligence Bureau alerted that Afroz shared his cell in reform home with a Kashmiri inmate involved in 2011 Delhi high court bombing and that he has been radicalised.

At present, he is supposedly under close watch.

Vinay Sharma: In August, this year, this former assistant gym instructor tried to commit suicide in Tihar jail by trying to hang himself from an iron grill using a piece of cloth, but he was spotted on time and was stopped from killing himself. According to jail authorities, he is suffering from depression and is no medicines.

Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, and Pawan Gupta: As the apex court is yet to make any decision in Nirbhaya rape case, all the accused including Vinay Sharma are kept in Tihar jail.

This December 16, it will be four years since this incident that rocked the nation and instigated many various discussions. The foreign media also covered this crime extensively and the otherwise nonchalant youth of this nation got down on the road demanding justice. However, the judicial system is yet to give its final verdict in this case.
