A week after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized over 3000 kg Heroin at the Adani group-owned Mundra Port, fresh details have emerged about the ongoing investigation.

The finance ministry on Wednesday informed that at least eight accused have been arrested in connection with the massive seizure of drugs from two containers that arrived at the Mundra Port from Afghanistan's Kandahar via Bandar Abbas port in Iran.

The eight suspects were detained after DRI conducted operations in Ahmedabad, Mandvi, Gandhidham, New Delhi, Noida, Chennai, Coimbatore and Vijayawada. Officials said that the multi-city raids had led to the recovery of 16.1kg Heroin from a godown in Delhi and 10.2 kg substance -- believed to be cocaine -- and another 11kg substance -- suspected to be Heroin -- from a residence in Noida.

Out of those arrested, four are Afghan nationals, three are Indians and one is an Uzbekistan national.

The finance ministry informed that the holder of the Import Export Code, which was used to import the consignment of Heroin, was arrested from Chennai.

Giving details of the drug seizure, the ministry said that the Heroin seized at the Mundra Port was concealed in jumbo bags declared as semi-processed Talc stones.

Officials said that the Heroin was placed in the lower layers of the bags and topped with Talc stones to avoid detection. Resultantly, the Heroin had to be painstakingly separated from the Talc stones.

After completion of the process, the total quantity of Heroin recovered in the shipment was 2988kg. Along with the recovery of 16.1kg Heroin from a godown in Delhi, the total seizure of drugs went up to 3004kg

Further investigation into the case is still underway.
