Rape threat to Virat Kohli's daughter: DCW directs Delhi Police to file FIR

Virat Kohli's nine-month-old daughter Vamika was subject to rape threats after the Indian team captain supported Mohammed Shami, who was being targeted by hate mongers. DCW has taken suo-motu cognisance and sought Delhi Police action.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli came out to support his Indian teammate and seamer Mohammed Shami after being subjected to communal hatred following India's loss to arch-rival Pakistan in the opening game of the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup. Kohli went on to call the abusers 'spineless' people and stated that the team was 200% behind Shami.

Following the same and India's loss to New Zealand last Sunday, Kohli's nine-month-old daughter Vamika started receiving rape threats. The act was condemned by millions across social media. Kohli even received support from Pakistani pacer Mohammad Amir and legendary former Pakistani skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) has taken suo-motu cognisance of the issue. It has also asked the Delhi Police to file a First Information Report and provide them with the copy of the same along. The DCW also sought the details of those identified and arrested. Also, it has requested that if the accused has not been arrested, then the police must provide details of the steps taken to ensure the same.

Moreover, a comprehensive report has also been sought for the action taken against the accused. The DCW has urged DP to consider the situation with utmost gravity and seriousness, besides providing them with the demanded information by November 8, 2021 (Monday).

It is not the first time that the family of an Indian cricketer has been targeted over the underperformance of the side. During the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, MS Dhoni's daughter Ziva also received rape threats following Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) low-key show. The side had finished seventh and missed out on the playoffs berth for the first time in its IPL tenure.
