Les Cayes (Haiti): Even as crowds of silent Haitians looked on Tuesday as an excavator dug through the debris of a 3-storey apartment building that collapsed in Saturday's magnitude 7.2 earthquake, officials raised the death toll by more than 500, taking it to a total of 1,941.

Search and rescue efforts were forced to a temporary halt after a tropical storm lashed the Caribbean nation with rain, causing dangerous flooding.

The United Nations' children's agency UNICEF said that more than half a million children have been affected by the disaster which destroyed more than 60,000 homes and damaged 76,000.

Bruno Maes, the United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF) representative in the country said, "Countless Haitian families who have lost everything due to the earthquake are now living literally with their feet in the water due to the flooding.”

"Right now, about half a million Haitian children have limited or no access to shelter, safe water, healthcare and nutrition."
The United Nations has allocated $8 million as emergency funds to provide relief for the affected people.

Neighbouring Latin America countries including Venezuela, Chile, Mexico, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic sent food, medicine and supplies. The United States has also dispatched search and rescue teams with supplies.
