"Some countries really need to take a look in the mirror in terms of what they are doing to drive infection rates down. Otherwise, health systems in many countries will face real issues in the days to come." That's what Dr Micheal Ryan, Executive Director of WHO Health Emergencies Programme, said at a press briefing on Monday.

"What is driving these huge spikes in infection... it may be contributed by the variants, but what is driving it is the proximity between people, crowding of people without protection and poorly-ventilated spaces without wearing masks. I know how hard that is in some countries. but that is the brutal reality," Dr Micheal Ryan said.

"Some countries are at such a rate of infection that their health system is under severe pressure. We have seen the tragedy in India. We need to avoid the same tragedy occurring in other countries. And some of the countries are heading in that direction," Dr Micheal Ryan added.
