Post Rs 4.2 crore fraud, BBMP to install CCTVs and reject payment to multiple accounts

The BBMP will install CCTVs and reject payment to contractors who have multiple accounts to ensure the amount is not swindled. This after three officials allegedly siphoned off Rs 4.2 crore by using a fake account for which they were suspended after an FIR was registered.

To fix a problem of brokers and corruption in the BBMP, the palike has passed an order stating that the entire Chief Account Office will come under CCTV vigilance. This after three of its staff colluded with brokers and siphoned off Rs 4.2 crore.

According to Bengaluru mayor, M Goutham Kumar, to avoid such an embarrassment in future, CCTVs will be installed in CAO premises. This apart, the powers of the chief accounts officer have been withdrawn. The power to clear all files pertaining to the release of funds will rest solely with the special commissioner of finance.

As the officials accused in the fraud allegedly opened another account by using the documents of contractors who actually executed the civic work, the BBMP has asked all contractors to register with corporation and will suspend contractors who register with multiple bank accounts.
