Union Budget 2021: How about funds for ecological infra?

How much with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocate for infrastructure and transportation sector? That's a question doing the rounds in the run up to the Union Budget 2021.

Professor Ashish Verma, Convenor of Sustainable Transportation Lab at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, has stressed for budget allocation for Railways expansion for both passenger as well as goods as it will reduce pollution.

This apart, he suggested improvement of alternate routes to avoid disruption of transportation.

As expansion of 'highways' would mean destruction of environment, he stressed on not to focus on this aspect but suggested allocating funds for augmentation of bus rapid transportation, light rail system or mass rapid transit system in urban and semi-urban areas.

Since there is more population in urban areas, to encourage them to walk and avoid them taking their vehicle which results in traffic, he pitched for better walking paths, cycling tracks and electric vehicles.
