    India's most beautiful building: 11 heart-stopping wonders from the Rashtrapati Bhavan

    Formerly built as the residence for the Viceroy of India during the British dominion. But today's Rashtrapati Bhavan, home to the president of the world's largest democracy. It was Sir Lutyens who perceived the H-shaped building, covering an area of 5 acres on a 330-acre estate. This presidential home has a total of 340 rooms spread over four floors, 2.5 kilometres of corridors and 190 acres of garden area.

    Painstaking efforts of thousands of labourers this prestigious building completed in the year 1929. From being a representation of imperial rule and authority, it is today emblematic of Indian democracy and its secular, plural and inclusive traditions. Rashtrapati Bhavan has since independence hosted defence statement functions, swearing in of its leaders, honoured its brave hearts and achievers, has heard the speeches of world leaders, signed pacts and treaties with several countries, celebrated India’s Independence and Republic Day functions along with other festivals.

    In pics: Virat Kohli and other dignitaries receive Padma awards

     

    On March 30, the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee confers Padma awards at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. Vice President of India Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Speaker of the Lok Sabha Sumitra Mahajan and many others VIPs attended the ceremony.

     

    Among the awardees were cricket Virat Kohli, singer Dr. Anuradha Paudwal, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, Sharad Pawar and many others.

    Iconic Mughal Gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan are now open for public

    President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the Mughal Gardens on Saturday as part of the Udyanotsav.


    The iconic garden at the Rashtrapati Bhavan will be open for general public till March 12, 2017 (except Mondays) between 0930 hrs to 1600 hrs.


    A Rashtrapati Bhavan statement said that entry and exit for people to reach the Mughal Gardens will be from Gate No 35 of the President's Estate, close to where North Avenue meets Rashtrapati Bhavan.


    "Visitors are requested not to bring any water bottles, briefcases, handbags/ladies purses, cameras, radios, transistors, boxes, umbrellas, eatables etc. Such articles, if any, will have to be deposited at the entry point," it said.
