NGT rejects KMDA’s plea to allow Chhath puja inside Rabindra Sarobar Lake

The National Green Tribunal on Thursday (September 17) rejected the plea of state agency Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) for granting permission for Chhat puja in Rabindra Sarobar this year (2020) with restrictions, and upheld its previous order banning any such ritual there to save its ecosystem.

Fencing too is underway. With such vigilance, tractors and vehicles plying near the lake bed with commuters dumping waste are caught and penalty is being imposed to send a clear message that no one can damage Varthur and Bellanduru lake and water bodies in the city.

 The National Green Tribunal (NGT) constituted a committee to monitor the development of lakes. Now, the committee is left in deep shock by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewage Board (BWSSB) as it has built sewage treatment Plant without the provision to let the treated water into lakes.  The committee headed by former Lokayukta Santosh Hegde visited Agra Lake and made this observation. He says he will send the report  to NGT for further action.
