Interim Bail  

A Supreme Court bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud pronounced the judgement giving reasons for the interim bail to Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami on November 11 in the Anvay Naik suicide case. Delivering the judgement, a Bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Indira Banerjee held that criminal law should not become a tool for selective harassment.

Comedian Kunal Kamra, who is facing contempt of court charges after a series of tweets criticising the Supreme Court for granting interim bail to Republic TV Editor Arnab Goswami, has refused to apologise for his remarks. Kamra took to Twitter to say, "No lawyers, no apology, no fine, no waste of space."

The SC bench said: "We are of the considered view that the high court was in error in rejecting the application for grant of interim bail. We accordingly order and direct that the appellants shall be released on interim bail immediately, subject to each of them furnishing a personal bond of Rs 50,000 each."
 

The Alibaug Court on Tuesday reserved orders in the revision application moved by the State seeking police custody over Goswami.

A day after Bombay High Court rejected Arnab Goswami’s interim bail, the Republic TV Editor-In-Chief on Tuesday approached the Supreme Court challenging the order.

The Supreme Court move comes a day after the high court refused to grant Arnab Goswami interim bail using its powers under Article 226 of the Constitution, saying he should instead go to a sessions court and apply for regular bail.
