Indira Canteens  

As Bengaluru is totally shut due to Karnataka lockdown till March 31. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) took this decision to ensure the downtrodden does not go hungry. Indira Canteens in all the 198 wards of the BBMP will be serving food three times a day. 

Confusion prevailed over BJP’s contradicting statements on renaming Indira canteens. However, chief minister BS Yediyurappa clarified that Indira canteens won’t be renamed.
 

The Congress MLA reportedly said that during his visit to the nine Indira Canteens in his constituency, he found that the number of patrons who had breakfast and lunch there declined drastically. There were less than 100 people consuming food there

After BJP corporator Umesh Shetty alleged that the quality of food served in Indira Canteen was substandard, Karnataka deputy chief minister G Parameshwara has conducted surveys and ordered inspections on a weekly basis.

Metro ran in intervals of seven minutes, but there was a dip in the number of commuters. State-run Indira Canteens too functioned without any problems in Bengaluru

The Kumaraswamy-led Karnataka government has not released any money for Indira Canteens, forcing Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to shell out money from its pockets to continue the subsidised food scheme.
