    Former Cuban president Fidel Castro, who led a revolution on the Caribbean nation, died on Friday.

    "The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this evening," his brother, President Raul Castro, announced on national television. 

    The former military leader, who ruled Cuba from 1959 to 2008, was 90 years old.

    Castro seized power in 1958, when his guerrilla forces overthrew of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1958.

    His close ties to other Communist nations led to frayed relations with the US.

    Diplomatic tensions between the two countries nearly led to a nuclear confrontation during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962.

    Catro was the world’s third longest-serving head of state, after Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and the King of Thailand.

    Fidel Castro, former Cuban president, dies aged 90

    Fidel Castro, Cuba's former president and leader of the Communist revolution, has died aged 90, state TV has announced

    He had been in poor health for the past several years and had not made many public appearances. 


    He was president of the Caribbean island for more than 30 years. 


    His brother, Raul, became president in 2008 after a string of illnesses saw the historic figure withdraw from the public eye.
