Margins were tight in the counting of votes which went on till way past midnight. The Mahagathbandhan fought, but fell short, a little too short.  As the counting of votes has concluded, here's a look at how the key candidates of major parties fared at the polls.

While BJP performed a stellar role in NDA's victory winning 72 seats, RJD also gave a spectacular performance by bagging 75 seats and emerged as the single largest party in the 243-member Bihar legislative assembly.
 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that "Every voter in Bihar has clearly stated that his priority is only and only development."
 

The BJP put up a winning performance in the Bihar Assembly polls leading the ruling NDA to obtain majority, however RJD put up a tough fight but were pulled down by Congress’ dismal show.

The NDA maintained an edge over the RJD-led Grand Alliance as counting progressed slowly in Bihar. With more than two third of the votes still to be counted, and the margin of lead being less than 1,000 in about a score of seats, the game is still wide open.

As per trends available till 4 pm, the NDA was leading in 128 seats -- the BJP in 75, the JD(U) in 48 and the VIP in five.

There is a see-saw battle between the two parties. BJP is currently ahead in 72 seats and the RJD is leading on 73.

Counting of votes is underway amid strict Covid-19 measures across 243 assembly constituencies to decide the fate of the Nitish Kumar government which has governed the state for 15 years.

As we await who will lead the next government in Bihar, here's a look at how the key candidates in the poll fray are performing.
 

 Leads showed the BJP far ahead of Nitish Kumar, with the JDU appearing to drag down the overall tally of the NDA.
 

 The JD(U)-BJP alliance is now ahead on as many as 119 seats while the RJD-Congress combine is leading on 114.
 

The early trends indicate the Mahagatbandhan has a lead as it is showing leads in 111 seats. While NDA is showing leads in 77 seats as of 9 am. The majority mark is 122.

The counting of votes on November 10 will begin as early as 8 am. The counting of votes and results on individual seats will be declared live at the following websites of Election Commission of India – eciresults.nic.in, eci.gov.in, and results.eci.gov.in.
