Xiaomi to open second phone manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh

At an event held in Delhi, Xiaomi announced its second manufacturing unit in India at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh. At the event the company also unveiled the Redmi 4A, which will be a make in India product. In fact, Manu Jain, Xiaomi India head said that 75 percent of its devices are Made in India. 

Xiaomi entered India in July 2014 and started local manufacturing just over a year later. The new facility will be exclusive to Xiaomi, while the older one may see Foxconn making handsets for other vendors too. Talking at the event, Jain said that over 90 percent of its employees are women and the company builds “one phone per second in India”.

“While I cannot disclose the exact capacity, I can tell you that we will be able to manufacture one phone per second whenever the lines are running. The two factories combined will provide employment to about 5,000 people, 90 per cent of which are women,” Xiaomi India Head Manu Jain said.

The move will help Xiaomi meet about 95 percent of its demand in India from these two facilities. However, it will continue to import accessories, ecosystem products and its premium product, Mi5 from China.

The Redmi 4A launched at the event will be manufactured at the Indian facilities. Priced at Rs 5,999, the Redmi 4A is the youngest member in the Xiaomi device portfolio. It features a 5-inch HD display, supports 4G VoLTE, 3120mAh battery, Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor with 2GB RAM, 13MP rear snapper and 5MP front camera. Read our first impressions of the Redmi 4A.
