In a strange incident, a prisoner at Viyyur Central Prison, Kerala, was caught with a mobile phone in his stomach, which he tried to smuggle into the jail by hiding in his anus. The convict Ansad, a native of North Paravur, was trying to smuggle the phone by hiding in his rectum.

The incident came to light when jail officials noted that the prisoner was showing difficulty walking. The officials took him to District Hospital. On examination, it was found that something strange was in his stomach.

He was then moved to Medical College, and detailed examination revealed that he was hiding a mobile phone in his stomach. Following this, a doctor removed the instrument by flushing his stomach. He is expected to leave the hospital in two days.

On Friday, Ansad was taken to Paravur court, and it is believed that he got the mobile phone from there. He tried to hide the phone in this backside, but it moved up the rectum to reach his stomach.

Ansad, convicted for various crimes is an inmate of B block in the high-security prison. He is accused in more than 20 cases and has been in Viyyur jail for over two years.

The incident is an example of security lapses at Kerala's first high-tech, high-security prison. There are only two officials to check prisoners returning to jail from outside. It is suspected that most prisoners smuggle mobile and other things to jail by concealing it inside their private parts, when they are taken out of jail for medical tests or to courts, where they get a chance to meet their relatives or associates. However, it is not possible to seize smugglings of the sort without advanced facilities like a scanner.

Mobile phones were recovered from the jail several times. There are allegations that prison inmates have access to cell phones with the help of officials and that authorities are trying to cover up illegal activities on jail premises.
