On April 19, elections will be conducted in 102 Lok Sabha seats that are spread over 21 states and Union Territories. These are the important seats to watch in the first round of voting, which runs from Nagpur, Maharashtra, to Jorhat, Assam.

 

The daughter of the late M Karunanidhi, Kanimozhi seeks reelection after securing a resounding victory in the 2019 polls, where she defeated BJP's Tamilisai Soundararajan by an impressive margin of 3.47 lakh votes.

The resignation came amid reports of her plans to contest the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Tamil Nadu. Soundararajan had contested the 2019 Parliament elections from Thoothukudi seat in southern Tamil Nadu on a BJP ticket and lost to DMK's Kanimozhi.

In response to the calamity, Stalin announced flood relief measures, offering Rs 6,000 to individuals severely impacted by the heavy rains in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts. Additionally, affected families in Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts were allocated Rs 1,000 each.

The Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, and Indian Coast Guard have mobilized ground and aerial teams, including helicopters and aircraft, to assist in relief operations. Over 100 stranded individuals have been moved to safer locations, with a focus on pregnant women

Expressing concern over the unprecedented situation, Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena highlighted the gravity of the situation, mobilizing support from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Additionally, 84 boats were deployed for rescue operations, with special attention directed towards areas like Thoothukudi, Srivaikundam, and Kayalpattinam.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy rain in specific districts of Tamil Nadu, including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, and Thanjavur on December 18.
