Kerala's Opposition leader V D Satheesan on Thursday (April 4) said that the Congress does not require the support of the Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. 

The Kerala BJP slammed the LDF and the UDF for attending the Iftar party organised by the Kozhikode Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Thursday evening (Mar 21). The BJP alleged that both the fronts are in alliance with the extremist organisation.

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi sent a strong message, stating:  "The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka's reputation, sovereignty or integrity." Reacting to the statement, K.Annamalai wrote: "Congress party extends an olive branch to parties such as SDPI for electoral gains, has fielded a candidate who central agencies raided for links to funding extremists is speaking of Sovereignty."

Smaller parties in Karnataka such as the Karnataka Rashtra Samithi, the Aam Aadmi Party, the All India Majlis-Ittehadul Muslimeen and the Social Democratic Party of India too have announced their first and second lists.

In recent years, the now-banned PFI, along with its associates such as the political offshoot SDPI and the students' wing Campus Front of India (CFI), have made their presence felt in the state's Muslim-dominated areas, particularly along the coast.

On September 22, the NIA and ED carried out searches against the PFI at 93 locations in 15 states, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, West Bengal, Bihar and Manipur. At least 106 PFI members and their alleged associates were arrested in the first round of raids.

The hartal was called by the PFI to protest against the raids in the offices and residences of its leaders and their subsequent arrests on Thursday by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and other agencies for allegedly supporting terror activities in the country.

The activists of PFI and its allied organisations were also arrested for killings of RSS-BJP leaders in Kerala in the recent months. The fund raising activities of the PFI are also being investigated by the central agencies like the ED and Income Tax Department.

Asked about the ongoing National Investigation Agency raids on Popular Front of India activists, Rahul Gandhi told media persons that there needs to be zero tolerance towards communalism.

National President of the SDPI, MK Faizy urged all secular parties to unite and come forward to oppose and defeat the fascist regime; and demanded that all the arrested leaders should be released immediately.
