The Karnataka Congress government's plea for drought relief, amounting to 8 thousand crores, has prompted a legal battle with the central government, with the Supreme Court issuing a notice to the Centre. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal urged urgency, while the Centre emphasized dialogue over litigation. The dispute highlights growing tensions between state and central authorities.

The Tamil Nadu assembly passed a resolution demanding Cauvery water from Karnataka to support delta farmers. Chief Minister MK Stalin urged compliance with Cauvery Water Management Authority directives, citing an "artificial crisis." The AIADMK supported the resolution, but the dispute remains unresolved, with BJP amendments excluded.
 

A crucial Cauvery Water Control Committee meeting is scheduled amid Karnataka's drought, with the state hoping to avoid further water releases to Tamil Nadu. Karnataka plans to reiterate its stance during the meeting, chaired by Vineet Gupta, and decisions will be recommended to the Cauvery Water Management Authority. The previous two meetings recommended periodic 5,000 cusecs water releases, which had sparked objections from the state. 

Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara cites a 65% rainfall deficit in the state, making it impossible to comply with Cauvery Water Management Authority's order to divert water to Tamil Nadu. He highlights water scarcity in Bengaluru and requests consideration of current conditions and hardships. Supreme Court hearing anticipated.

The special bench constituted by Karnataka High Court will hear Thursday a total of five petitions on the hijab row on behalf of 18 girls from colleges in the Udupi region.
 

Supreme Court had released an order in 2009 stating that illegally constructed religious structures need to be removed/ relocated/ regularised by the state government. All the high courts were directed to monitor the actions taken by the state government to implement the order.

The court is hearing a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) registered based on the apex court’s directives. The court indicated that it would pass necessary orders once the government submits the report on prison facilities

Advocate Fali S Nariman argued for a deferment of the water release until the end of November, as there is a chance of rains by then. But the SC declined to consider that plea. 
 

Karnataka, in its fresh plea, had expressed inability to implement the apex court order on various grounds including the fact that it does not have adequate water to supply to its cities including Bengaluru

Terming the "law and order" ground taken by Karnataka as "absolutely disturbing" and "totally deprecable", it said that the averments in the application "cannot be conceived of to be filed in a Court of law".
