A week after Congress’ landslide victory in Karnataka assembly polls, Siddaramaiah took oath as Karnataka Chief Minister, and DK Shivakumar took oath as Deputy CM on Saturday. 

Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, who were camping in the national capital for days after winning the Karnataka Assembly polls, left for Bengaluru this afternoon. A Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting will be held in Bengaluru today at 7 pm.

The Congress returned to power on its own in Karnataka after 10 years, knocking the BJP off its only southern perch on Saturday as voters decisively backed the grand old party desperately seeking electoral revival ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

A trusted lieutenant of the Gandhi family, DK Shivakumar, an eight-time MLA, is considered as a "troubleshooter" for the party.

Karnataka Election Results 2023: The counting of votes polled for the 224-member Karnataka assembly polls began on Saturday, May 13, as parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress and JD-Secular, wait with bated breath for the verdict. The electoral fortunes of top leaders --  Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai of the BJP, Congress heavyweights Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, and Janata Dal-Secular's HD Kumaraswamy, among many others will be known today.  

In the 2018 Karnataka Assembly polls, the state recorded a voter turnout of 72.36 percent. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who is seeking re-election from Shiggaon in Haveri district for a fourth consecutive term, said he would win with a record margin. Bommai said the party would get a "comfortable majority".

Ahead of the Karnataka Election 2023, PM Narendra Modi addressed 18 rallies in the southern state and spoke to party members through a virtual interaction on April 27. He also led six roadshows -- three in Bengaluru and one each in Mysuru, Kalaburagi and Tumakuru.

Even during the Bengaluru roadshow on Saturday, Prime Minister Modi was seen donning the traditional Mysore Peta.

The latest opinion poll, commissioned by Asianet News Network and conducted by Jan Ki Baat between April 15 and May 1 after ticket distribution and nomination filing by key candidates of three major political parties in the state, shows the BJP gaining ground while the JD-S is struggling to hold on to its vote bank.
