Missing complaint raises suspicion

According to the police, as reported by the Times of India, Umendra approached the authorities on July 31 and reported Anjali missing. He claimed that she had left home with jewellery. However, Anjali's brother suspected that Umendra knew more about her disappearance and accused him of being involved in the case.

The police then registered a murder case after Anjali's body was recovered from the Gomti River on July 31. Her family members later identified the body as that of Anjali.

Rahimabad SHO Anil Kumar Trigunayak said the investigation changed direction after technical evidence did not support the husband's version of events.

Police began examining mobile phone locations, call records and other electronic evidence to establish where Umendra had been around the time Anjali disappeared.

The evidence eventually led investigators towards him.

Police say affair began seven months earlier

During questioning, Umendra allegedly told investigators that he had met Aarti Verma, 31, around seven months earlier. Aarti worked at a call centre and had booked a cab ride that Umendra was driving. The two allegedly remained in contact after their first meeting and later developed a romantic relationship, according to the police.

Investigators said Anjali eventually learnt about the relationship and objected to it.

Police alleged that repeated arguments between Umendra and Anjali over his relationship with Aarti led the two accused to plan her murder. The police have described the case as a planned killing carried out by Umendra and Aarti. The allegations are yet to be tested in court.

Wife allegedly smothered at home

According to investigators, Umendra and Aarti carried out the alleged murder on the night of July 30.

Police said the duo smothered Anjali and squeezed her neck until she died.

After her death, the accused allegedly wrapped her body in a blanket. They then placed it in a hatchback car and drove towards the area around Itaunja, where they allegedly dumped the body into the Gomti River.

The police said the car used to transport the body has since been seized.

The recovery of Anjali's body helped investigators establish that the missing person complaint was allegedly part of an attempt to hide the killing.

Investigators also believe Umendra tried to make it appear that Anjali had voluntarily left home. Police said he removed around 32 gold and silver ornaments belonging to Anjali and handed them over to Aarti.

The jewellery was allegedly worth between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 10 lakh. Umendra then approached the police with the missing complaint, claiming that Anjali had disappeared with her valuables.

Investigators said this was intended to support the impression that Anjali had left home on her own and had taken the jewellery with her.

However, the digital evidence examined by the police allegedly contradicted his account.

The jewellery was later recovered from Aarti, police said. Two mobile phones and the car allegedly used in the crime were also seized.

Digital trail helped police crack case

The investigation reportedly turned on the digital evidence collected by the police.

After Anjali's brother raised suspicion about Umendra, investigators began checking the movements and communication records of those connected to the case.

Police said the technical evidence did not match Umendra's version of what had happened. The digital trail eventually led investigators to him, and he was arrested near Adaura Mod on August 1.

During questioning, police said Umendra disclosed his alleged relationship with Aarti and described her involvement in the killing. Aarti was subsequently arrested by the police.

The arrests came shortly after Anjali's body was recovered from the Gomti River.

Wife cries for help as man allegedly attacks

According to police, Rinku had reached the bridge on a motorcycle with his wife and their daughter. An argument broke out between the couple during the incident.

Police said Rinku allegedly tried to throw his wife into the Yamuna. She raised an alarm, prompting people passing by to rush to her aid.

The woman was rescued before she could be thrown into the river. Passersby then allegedly overpowered Rinku and beat him at the spot.

A video showing locals assaulting the accused has since surfaced on social media.

Police said that during the incident, Rinku allegedly threw his 11-month-old daughter into the Yamuna from the bridge. The child had not been located when the police statement was issued. Divers have been deployed and a search-and-rescue operation is under way in the river.

“The rescue operation for the child is on with help of divers,” police confirmed.

The police said the accused has been taken into custody and further legal action is being carried out.

Trailer driver fled after accident

The night before Mahek’s body was found

Mahek, who was from Assam, lived with her friend in room number 13 of a rented building in Barola. Raman lived on the same floor in room number 23. Police said the two knew each other and were friends.

According to Mahek’s roommate, the two were seen together during the night of August 7 and 8. The woman allegedly saw Mahek and Raman drinking on Raman’s balcony.

They reportedly had a bottle of liquor, a bottle of water and chips with them and spent some time talking. Later, both went inside Raman’s room.

The next morning, Mahek’s roommate noticed that she was missing from their room. She called her phone, but it was switched off.

The roommate then went towards Raman’s room and found its door locked. Raman’s phone was also unreachable, raising suspicion.

The building owner, Sarthak Bansal, was informed about the situation. A caretaker subsequently broke open the lock.

Body found inside locked room

When the door was opened, people reportedly noticed a strong smell coming from inside. Mahek’s body was found lying on the floor. Police said it was covered in blood.

The police were immediately informed and reached the building to begin their investigation.

Two major questions confronted investigators: how had Mahek ended up inside Raman’s room, and where had Raman gone?

Police questioned Mahek’s roommate and other people living in the building. Their statements reportedly strengthened suspicion around Raman.

A murder case was registered at Sector 49 police station in Noida on August 10, following which police began searching for him.

By then, however, Raman had allegedly left Noida.

From Noida to his hometown

Investigators traced Raman’s movements and learnt that he had travelled towards Katihar, his hometown in Bihar.

However, his arrival in Katihar brought another unexpected development.

Bihar has prohibition on alcohol. During a police patrol, personnel from Katihar Nagar Police allegedly spotted Raman near Phulwari Kali Mandir Pokhar.

Police said five bottles of liquor were recovered from him. He was arrested and a case was registered against him under the state’s liquor prohibition laws.

At that stage, Katihar Police were dealing with a liquor case, while Noida Police were searching for the same man in connection with a murder investigation.

The two cases came together when Noida Police learnt that Raman was already in custody in Katihar.

Noida Police reach Katihar

A Noida Police team subsequently travelled to Katihar to take the investigation forward.

However, Raman cannot simply be taken from Bihar to Uttar Pradesh because he is already in custody in another case. The Noida team must complete the necessary court and judicial procedures before obtaining his custody.

Police are therefore pursuing the required process to seek his remand for questioning in connection with the Noida murder case.

Katihar DSP Vishal Anand said Raman had been arrested in the liquor case and that Noida Police had reached Katihar in connection with the murder investigation. He also said Katihar Police were cooperating with the Noida team.

What happened inside the room?

Several questions remain unanswered.

Investigators will need to establish exactly what happened after Mahek entered Raman’s room that night. They will also have to determine how she died, whether she was attacked, what may have led to her death and whether anyone else was involved.

Police are also expected to examine Raman’s movements after the incident and the route he took from Noida to Katihar.

The discovery of Mahek’s body and Raman’s absence from the room are central parts of the investigation so far. However, the allegations against him have not been established in court and remain subject to police investigation and judicial proceedings.

For now, a case that began with the discovery of a young woman’s body in a rented room in Noida has moved to Katihar, where police are waiting for the legal process to allow them to question the man they suspect in the case.

The incidents were reported from Ganeshpur village under the Kudh Fatehgarh police station area. The first case took place on Sunday, July 19, when five-year-old Sunahari, daughter of Vinod Kumar, was bitten by a snake inside the family home.

The snake was reportedly identified as a krait, a venomous species. Sunahari was treated for around 24 hours, but her condition did not improve. She died on July 20.

The third incident happened on Sunday, August 2. Pramod, son of Nanhe, was bitten while sleeping. His condition was serious, and he was shifted to Meerut for further treatment. He recovered after treatment and returned home.

Then came the fourth Sunday, August 9. Nanhe’s daughter was also bitten by a snake inside the house. She is currently undergoing treatment.

Prabhat Sharma, ranger for the Chandausi tehsil, said the Forest Department had caught and released the snake into a forest after one of the incidents. He said the snake was a poisonous krait.

Child was taken to hospital after falling ill

According to police, the child's father, Krishna Murari Gupta, runs a medical shop and was at work when his wife, Ruchi Jindal, called him on June 28. She reportedly told him that their son had become unwell after crying continuously and had stopped responding.

The family rushed the child to several doctors before taking him to a private hospital in Mathura. Doctors there reportedly declared the boy dead.

The family initially believed that the child's death may have been linked to polio drops he had received earlier that day. With no suspicion of foul play at the time, they buried the child's body.

Husband allegedly overhears phone conversation

The case took a different turn on Monday when Krishna Murari allegedly overheard his wife discussing the child's death while speaking to another man on the phone.

He reportedly confronted her about what he had heard. According to police, she then allegedly confessed to her family members and the police.

The woman's brother-in-law, Govind Gupta, later reportedly checked her call records. He alleged that she had been in frequent and lengthy contact with the man.

Police are now examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged relationship and whether it had any connection to the child's death.

Police to exhume child's body

Baldev Station House Officer Ajay Sharma said a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder had been registered following a complaint filed by Govind Gupta.

The SHO told PTI that the accused woman had not been arrested so far. He added that further action would depend on the findings of the post-mortem examination.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Mahavan) Sanjeev Kumar Rai said the child's body would be exhumed so that a post-mortem could be carried out.

Police are expected to examine the medical evidence and statements from family members as part of the investigation. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the post-mortem and the evidence collected during the probe.

The deceased, identified as Raviraj, was a native of Khagaria in Bihar and lived in a rented accommodation in Behlampur, Sector 63, Noida. He worked as an online delivery worker, according to a Dainik Bhaskar report.

Manjha caught Raviraj's neck on NH-9

According to police, Raviraj had gone out on his motorcycle with his friend Naresh on Saturday. Raviraj was riding the bike while Naresh was seated behind him. Both men had travelled from Noida and were heading towards Ghazipur in Delhi.

They entered NH-9 from the Sector 43 cut when the manjha suddenly became entangled around Raviraj's neck.

The motorcycle was moving at speed, and the sharp string caused a deep cut to his neck. The injury was so severe that, according to doctors, the cut reached the bone in his neck.

Raviraj's neck was left badly injured and he began bleeding heavily. Blood reportedly spread across the highway.

Friend and passers-by tried to save him

Naresh somehow managed to bring the motorcycle under control and raised an alarm for help. He and some people who stopped at the spot tried to support Raviraj's neck and control the bleeding.

A cloth was tied around his neck in an attempt to stem the bleeding before police arrived.

After receiving information about the incident, Kaushambi police reached the spot and rushed Raviraj to Max Hospital in Vaishali. However, doctors declared him dead after examination.

ACP Indirapuram Suryabali Maurya also reached the hospital after being informed about the incident, the Dainik Bhaskar report added.

Doctors told police that Raviraj had suffered a wound around 5 cm deep on his neck and that the injury had also cut the underlying bone.

His family later took the body to Noida and reportedly declined a post-mortem examination.

Chinese manjha remains a deadly threat

The Ghaziabad incident is the latest in a series of serious injuries and deaths linked to banned Chinese manjha in Uttar Pradesh.

In December 2025, a young man travelling home on a motorcycle in Lucknow suffered a severe neck injury after getting caught in Chinese manjha. Doctors saved his life after putting seven stitches in his neck.

In Shahjahanpur, 26-year-old Ravi Sharma died in October 2025 after Chinese manjha became entangled around his neck while he was travelling with his wife. A month earlier, 28-year-old Salman died in Aligarh after the string caught his neck while he was riding a scooter to his shop.

In July 2025, Amit Gupta suffered serious injuries in Gorakhpur when Chinese manjha caught his neck while he was travelling with his mother. Four blood vessels were reportedly cut in the incident.

Earlier in January 2025, Shahjahanpur police constable Shahrukh Hasan died after suffering a severe neck injury from Chinese manjha while travelling to duty.

Why Chinese manjha is so dangerous

Chinese manjha, also commonly called plastic manjha, is different from traditional cotton kite string. It is generally made using synthetic material such as nylon and can be coated with abrasive material, making it extremely sharp and difficult to break.

When stretched across roads, the nearly invisible string can pose a serious danger to motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians and animals. A rider travelling at speed may have little or no time to spot it before it catches the neck or another exposed part of the body.

The string can cause deep cuts and, in serious cases, fatal injuries.

Chinese manjha is banned, but still sold

The National Green Tribunal banned the manufacture, sale, storage, purchase and use of nylon and synthetic manjha across India in 2017. Uttar Pradesh has also enforced restrictions on Chinese manjha.

Despite the ban, the string continues to be sold illegally in several places, leading to repeated accidents.

Violations can attract action under environmental laws, including penalties under the Environment (Protection) Act. Authorities have also taken action against shops found selling banned manjha, including sealing premises in some cases.

What Devdutt Sharma wrote in his final message

Before his death, Devdutt Sharma reportedly sent a WhatsApp message to his 21-year-old niece, Neha Sharma, explaining why he had taken the step. In the message, Sharma said he could no longer bear the humiliation he had been facing. He wrote that dying once seemed easier than living through the same pain every day, while insisting that he did not consider himself a coward.

Sharma also asked that his wife not be allowed to touch his body after his death. The message went on to include instructions about his last rites. Sharma reportedly asked his family not to spend much money on his cremation and not to use cow dung cakes.

He also said he did not want any religious rituals to be performed for the peace of his soul, adding that he wanted his soul to remain restless.

Towards the end of the message, Sharma asked his niece to take care of her mother.

Police are now verifying the message as part of their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sharma’s death.

Sharma ran gym since 2000

Sharma had been running a gym called Rock Gym behind his home since 2000. He was also known locally as a bodybuilder.

For the past two years, he had worked as a clerk at Balaji Group of College, earning a reported monthly salary of ₹17,000. Before that, he had worked at Tilak Ram Saini Girls College and Elamchand Saini Girls College.

A neighbour, Sushil, said Sharma had been at the gym on Saturday evening before returning home.

Sharma had been married to Seema for 33 years. The couple had two sons. Their elder son, Abhishek, works in Dubai, while their younger son, Aditya, is studying forensic science in Chandigarh.

Aditya is also a powerlifter and recently won a gold medal at a competition in Dehradun after lifting 135 kg in the 74 kg category.

Police question family members

Sharma's parents had died several years ago. He was the elder of two siblings. His sister, Rajni, is the mother of Neha, who received his final WhatsApp message.

Police said Sharma's wife and other family members would be questioned as part of the probe.

SHO Pravesh Kumar Sharma visited the scene along with police personnel and forensic experts. The evidence collected from the house will be examined as investigators try to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

Circle Officer Pawan Kumar said further legal action would depend on the findings of the complete investigation.

The case has left Sharma's family and neighbours shocked, particularly those who knew him through his long association with the local gym and his work at colleges in the area.

Heavy rain on Sunday turned parts of the Bachhrawan Community Health Centre in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, into a waterlogged zone, exposing serious problems with the hospital’s drainage system. The waterlogging also affected important areas including the Jan Aushadhi centre, superintendent’s office and auditorium, according to a Dainik Bhaskar report.

Maternity ward among worst affected

The maternity and newborn ward was reportedly one of the worst-hit sections. Dirty rainwater spread across the floor while pregnant women and newborn babies remained on their beds.

The stagnant water also reportedly caused a foul smell inside the ward. Patients and their families expressed concern over hygiene and the possibility of infections, particularly for mothers and newborn children.

Health-related work at the centre was also affected, while patients arriving at the facility had to make their way through the accumulated water.

Patients complain of recurring problem

Patients and attendants said waterlogging is not a new problem at the health centre. They claimed that even relatively light rain can leave parts of the hospital flooded because of inadequate drainage.

Sunday’s heavy rainfall made the situation considerably worse, with water spreading across several sections of the facility.

The condition prompted patients and local residents to demand a permanent solution rather than temporary measures after every spell of rain. They have urged hospital authorities and concerned officials to repair the drainage system at the earliest.

Hospital promises corrective action

CHC superintendent Arpita acknowledged that heavy rainfall had caused water to enter the wards.

She said the drainage arrangements would be repaired soon.

A 52-year-old electricity department contractor was allegedly chased and attacked with a sword by a minor in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, with a video of the brutal killing emerging on social media days after the incident. The victim, identified as Shivkumar Tripathi, was attacked on August 8 in the Sikriganj area. Police said eight people have been arrested in connection with the murder.

Contractor attacked during family feast

According to police, Tripathi, a resident of Ahirauli village, had gone there to attend a Brahm Bhoj on August 8, according to a report by Dainik Bhaskar. He was sitting on the ground and having food when Rahul Chaudhary, 30, allegedly attacked him from behind with a sharp-edged weapon.

Tripathi suffered serious injuries and fell to the ground. People present at the spot intervened, following which the attackers initially left.

Family members of the hosts then put Tripathi in an auto-rickshaw and began taking him to hospital. However, police said Rahul and seven others stopped the vehicle on the way.

The video, which surfaced on Tuesday evening, allegedly shows the minor chasing Tripathi on the road and repeatedly attacking him with a sword.

At one point, Tripathi can be seen joining his hands and appearing to plead with the attacker to spare him. The assault continues before the accused allegedly leaves after believing that the contractor was dead.

The footage was posted on Facebook on August 11 by Vishwajeet Tripathi, a local councillor and lawyer from Betiahata. He alleged that police pressured him to delete the video.

Police officials reportedly reached the court and attempted to take him to the police station. The move was opposed by lawyers, after which the police left.

Murder linked to old rivalry

Police said the murder appears to be linked to an old dispute between the two sides.

According to the investigation, Rahul Chaudhary’s cousin, Aadesh Chaudhary, was murdered in 2024. Some members of Tripathi’s family had reportedly been named in connection with that case.

Police suspect the alleged past rivalry led to the latest attack. Local residents also said hostility had continued between the families since Aadesh’s murder.

Eight arrested, station officer removed

SSP Dr Kaustubh said all eight accused had been arrested and sent to jail. He also ordered Sikriganj police station in-charge Anjul Chaturvedi to be sent to the police lines with immediate effect over alleged negligence.

Police said action under the National Security Act (NSA) was also being considered against the accused.

Tripathi lived in Gorakhpur city with his wife, while his family remained in the village. His son, Aditya Tripathi, is a lawyer practising at the Gorakhpur Civil Court.

Police said the investigation is continuing to establish the precise roles of all those arrested and the circumstances surrounding the killing.
