A fatal shooting linked to ChatGPT advice sparks a legal probe into OpenAI. Explore the complex debate on AI accountability, criminal charges, and civil lawsuits.

A fatal shooting at Florida State University has ignited a significant conversation about whether artificial intelligence firms can be held legally accountable for crimes connected to their tech. Before carrying out the April 2025 attack, student Phoenix Ikner is believed to have used ChatGPT to inquire about weapons, ammunition, and the best time and location to cause the most damage. Authorities claim that the chatbot responded to these inquiries. The incident resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to six others.

Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, has initiated a criminal probe into OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT. He stated that if a human had given the same guidance, they could potentially be charged with homicide. This situation has prompted complex legal and ethical discussions about the limits of holding AI-generated advice accountable.

Legal Questions

Legal professionals note that criminal charges against companies in the US are possible but not common. In the past, companies like Purdue Pharma, Volkswagen, Pfizer, and Exxon have faced legal repercussions due to corporate misconduct. However, these cases involved direct human decisions made by company leaders or staff.

Also read: ‘Godfather of AI’ Geoffrey Hinton Raises Alarm Over AI Risks, Urges Strong Global Regulation

Matthew Tokson, a law professor at the University of Utah, highlights that this case is unique because the alleged encouragement originated from a digital product rather than a person. He describes the situation as legally intricate and largely untested. Legal experts interviewed by AFP suggest that prosecutors might consider charges related to negligence or recklessness, which involve failing to prevent known risks or overlooking safety duties.

Burden Proof

Experts also caution that achieving a criminal conviction would be extremely challenging. Brandon Garrett, a law professor at Duke University, explained that criminal cases require proof beyond a reasonable doubt, which is a very high standard. Tokson added that prosecutors would likely need strong evidence, such as internal documents showing OpenAI was aware of potential dangers but did not act accordingly.

OpenAI has denied that ChatGPT is responsible for the attack. The company claims it continues to enhance safety systems aimed at detecting harmful requests, preventing misuse, and responding to dangerous behaviour.

Civil Cases

Some legal professionals suggest that civil lawsuits may be a more practical way to hold AI companies accountable. These cases could push firms to implement stronger safeguards and take greater responsibility for the social impact of their products.

Several civil lawsuits involving AI platforms and suicides are currently being processed in the US.

One recent case was filed by the family of Suzanne Adams, who alleged that ChatGPT contributed to her son's murder. Lawyer Matthew Bergman acknowledged that newer versions of ChatGPT include more safety measures, although he questioned whether they are enough.

This case underscores increasing concerns about AI regulation and the absence of clear legal guidelines from the US government. Experts argue that stronger national regulations may offer a more effective solution than criminal prosecutions alone.

Sources: Phys.org - Tech Xplore

Also read: Is ChatGPT Changing How We Think? For the past four months, a huge number of internet users have been trying to find this so-called viral MMS clip. People are hunting for links to this video on platforms like Instagram, X, Telegram, and WhatsApp. Many websites and social media posts are claiming they have the video ready for you to watch or download. But now, cybersecurity experts have issued a serious warning about this whole thing.

Why clicking on these viral video links is so dangerous

According to cyber experts, hackers and online scammers are using trending keywords like ‘19 minute 34 second viral video’ to trap people. The moment a user clicks on such a suspicious link, they are redirected to a fake website. In many cases, these websites quietly install malware on the user's phone or computer. After this, hackers can try to steal personal information like bank account details, passwords, OTPs, and social media logins. Users are being lured to dangerous websites with the promise of watching or downloading these videos. According to experts, there is no confirmation of any real video called ‘19 minutes 34 seconds’. Under Section 67A, for sharing sexually explicit content, the punishment for a first-time offence is up to 5 years in prison and a ₹10 lakh fine. If the crime is repeated, the sentence can go up to 7 years.

Samsung Electronics has approved a massive bonus package for workers in its semiconductor division after reaching a deal with labour unions and avoiding an 18-day strike. Employees could receive average payouts of nearly Rs 3 crore due to booming AI.

Samsung Electronics has reached a major agreement with labour unions that could see employees in its semiconductor division receive average bonuses worth nearly $340,000 (about over Rs 3 crore) each. The deal has also helped the South Korean tech giant avoid a planned 18-day strike that threatened to affect global chip supplies.

According to reports by AFP and Bloomberg, the agreement was finalised after government-mediated discussions between Samsung management and labour unions.

Samsung's semiconductor workers just voted themselves an average bonus of nearly $400,000 each.A new profit-sharing deal gives 78,000 chip workers 10.5% of the company's operating profit. Workers will also receive an additional 1.5 per cent in cash payments.

According to company estimates quoted by AFP, the average payout could reach around 509 million won per employee, which is roughly $338,000 or more than Rs 3 crore.

Bloomberg reported that the figure could rise slightly higher to around 513 million won depending on the division’s final operating profits for 2026.

Yonhap News Agency separately reported that workers in Samsung’s memory chip business could receive nearly 600 million won each in some cases.

The huge bonus package comes as demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure continues to grow worldwide.

Samsung is one of the world’s largest makers of memory chips used in smartphones, laptops, cars and AI data centres that power platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

As companies rapidly expand AI systems and cloud computing infrastructure, demand for high-performance memory chips has increased sharply.

Samsung’s semiconductor business has benefited heavily from this trend. Reports said the company’s chip division recorded a 49-fold jump in operating income during the previous quarter due to strong global demand for AI-related chips.

The company recently also became only the second Asian company after TSMC to cross a market valuation of $1 trillion.

The bonus package applies only to Samsung’s semiconductor division and not to all employees across the company.

Samsung estimates that around 78,000 workers are employed in the chip-making business.

Based on current projections, the company may spend nearly $26.5 billion on bonuses if the full payout estimate is achieved.

Earlier this year, Samsung disclosed in a company filing that its employees earned an average annual salary of around 158 million won in 2025, which is close to Rs 1 crore.

Strike Threat Pulled Back After Agreement

The approval of the bonus plan came just days before workers were expected to begin an 18-day strike.

The planned strike had raised concerns across the global semiconductor industry because Samsung remains one of the biggest suppliers of memory chips worldwide.

You don’t need communism to reward workers.Samsung in capitalist South Korea will give bonuses equal to 50% of annual salary. This deal is for all semiconductor memory chip workers. Samsung will also set aside 10.5% of its chip division's operating profit for special… pic.twitter.com/z7yjkXObg3

— S.L.

Although Apple's next major iPhone release is still several months away, reports about the impending iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are already giving consumers a clear idea of what they could receive this year. The countdown has officially started since the new iPhone 18 series is anticipated to come in September if Apple follows its typical launch schedule. It's interesting to note that this year's roster could change significantly from earlier iterations.

According to reports, Apple may postpone the release of the basic iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e models until early next year, focusing instead on the high-end Pro versions. This may also help to explain why the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are now the subject of the majority of significant leaks. The upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models are tipped to arrive with a new chipset, upgraded camera hardware, improved battery life, a slimmer Dynamic Island, and Apple’s next-generation modem. There are also talks about changes to the display and design too.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Series: Expected Design & Display

According to reports, Apple is maintaining a recognisable overall appearance. It is anticipated that the iPhone 18 Pro series would maintain the huge back camera plateau and triple camera configuration found on previous Pro iPhones. Leaks, however, indicate that Apple could improve the rear finish a little to make the frame and back panel appear more cohesive.

On the front, one of the most discussed shifts is taking place. Apple may be attempting to scale back the Dynamic Island, according to many sources. Recent sources suggest that the technology may not be ready yet, despite the prior predictions that the firm will place Face ID entirely underneath the display. Alternatively, Apple might just make the Dynamic Island smaller to provide more room for screens.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max may also get a little thicker this year. According to leaks, it may be 8.8 mm thick instead of the previous model's 8.75 mm, which may seem little, but it supposedly enables Apple to squeeze a bigger battery inside. According to leaks, the device's thickness might be 8.8 mm, as opposed to the previous model's 8.75 mm. Although it might seem little, Apple is said to be able to put a bigger battery within.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Series: Expected Battery

Leaks suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro Max may have a battery capacity of 5,100–5,200 mAh. For your information, the 5,088mAh battery of the iPhone 17 Pro Max is rather smaller. When paired with the efficiency gains from Apple's next-generation 2nm chipset, the 18 Pro Max model's battery life may once again rank among its greatest features. The smaller Pro model's battery specifications are yet unknown.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Series: Camera Upgrade Coming?

This year, camera advancements are also anticipated to be significant. A variable aperture technology for the primary camera is apparently being tested by Apple. This would provide consumers more control over exposure and depth effects by enabling them to manually adjust the amount of light entering the sensor.

According to other leaks, Apple may employ a novel three-layer stacked image sensor created by Samsung. It is claimed that the improved sensor would provide higher dynamic range, lower noise, and increase responsiveness in images. A bigger aperture would also help the telephoto camera take better pictures in low light. According to reports, Apple is even investigating teleconverter technology to enhance zoom capability, but it's still unclear how precisely that would function on a smartphone.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Series: Expected Colours

Regarding colour, Apple could launch a new dark cherry finish for the lineup of iPhone 18 Pros. According to reports, it's a deep crimson colour with touches of purple. Light blue, dark grey, and silver are other colour possibilities that have been leaked; however, Apple may yet make adjustments before to the start of manufacturing.

Google wishes to alter the way you use your laptop. The business revealed Googlebooks, a new line of notebooks based on artificial intelligence, namely Gemini intelligence, during The Android Show: I/O Edition 2026. Googlebooks will probably compete with Apple's MacBook Neo, a device that has apparently found so much popularity that Apple is stepping up manufacturing. However, what is a Googlebook? What does this signify for laptops in the future?

Google claims that Googlebook combines the greatest features of both ChromeOS and Android. Users will be able to access new Gemini features and run Android applications directly on a Googlebook, which will provide an experience akin to that of ChromeOS on Chromebooks.

Remember that for a while now, there were rumours that Google was developing a new operating system based on Android.

The business claims that all Googlebooks will have high-end materials, probably similar to the MacBook Neo. You can see the new trademark "glowbar" for all Googlebooks below, which is an enhancement to the design. Google has suggested that this bar would have certain features.

Please take notice that the announcement's timing was intentional. Chromebooks were initially introduced by Google on May 11, 2011. Additionally, the Googlebook was unveiled nearly precisely on that day fifteen years ago.

Introducing Googlebook, the first laptop designed for Gemini Intelligence. It’s crafted for heavyweight performance, built with Gemini at the core and perfectly synced with your Android phone. Coming this fall. ✨#TheAndroidShow pic.twitter.com/rn4pztApmp

— Google (@Google) May 12, 2026

Gemini AI Features You Can Expect

You may utilise a Googlebook with many of the new AI functions. With new Gemini Intelligence capabilities that will soon be available on Android devices, the gadget is based on Google's AI helper Gemini.

The way you utilise the cursor has changed, which is a major feature. Googlebooks has a "Magic Pointer" with Gemini Intelligence that, when you wiggle it on the screen, can display AI-powered recommendations. That example, with a simple wiggle, the cursor may go from a standard cursor to an AI cursor. Google claims that the Google DeepMind team worked on this functionality.

Additionally, by providing Gemini with hints, you will be able to design your own widgets on a Googlebook. According to Google, Gemini can create a customised dashboard for you by connecting with Google apps like Gmail and Calendar or conducting online searches. For example, a user organising a family gathering in Berlin may ask Gemini to arrange restaurant reservations, hotel and travel information, and a countdown all in one location on the desktop.

"Cast My Apps," which makes it simple to utilise a smartphone app from your laptop, is one of Googlebook's additional features. Additionally, "Quick Access" enables you to effortlessly transfer files from your Android device to the Googlebook. The sharing of files from an iPhone to a Mac may be comparable to this.

When Is Launch Expected?

During the event, Google made no announcements about its own Googlebook product. Rather, the corporation has acknowledged that it is collaborating with companies including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to launch Googlebooks. The internet behemoth is adamant that Googlebooks would employ high-quality materials and be available in a variety of sizes.

As of right now, Google promises that Googlebooks will be on sale in the autumn of this year.

Apple is reportedly developing a new security feature designed to automatically lock an iPhone if it detects it has been stolen, even while unlocked. This function would use signals like sudden movement, distance from a paired Watch, and location data to secure the device in the critical first moments of a theft, expanding on existing protections.

If your iPhone gets stolen while it is unlocked, those first few seconds can put your sensitive data at risk. Before the owner has a chance to respond, a thief could attempt to swiftly access messages, banking applications, passwords, or even disable monitoring capabilities. According to reports, Apple is currently developing a new security function that might lock an iPhone as soon as it senses that it might have been stolen.

The functionality is intended for a typical theft scenario in which a phone is taken while the screen is still unlocked, according to 9to5Mac. Apple already offers anti-theft measures like Find My, Activation Lock, and Stolen Device Protection, but if the iPhone is unlocked when it is stolen, these measures lose some of their effectiveness.

However, by responding quickly in the initial seconds following a suspected snatching attempt, the new function allegedly seeks to address just that issue. The concept bears some resemblance to how Apple safeguards demo iPhones within its retail locations, wherein the devices immediately lock or deactivate themselves in the event that they are abruptly removed from the shop. Nonetheless, it is claimed that this new approach was created especially for actual theft scenarios involving personal electronics.

How Can This Ant-Theft Feature Work?

The report claims that Apple's technology would use a variety of signals to determine whether a theft could have occurred. The iPhone's accelerometer, which can identify abrupt and peculiar movement patterns, is anticipated to be one of the most significant signs of a stolen iPhone. The gadget may instantly activate a lock if it detects a jerky motion that looks like a phone being taken from someone's grasp.

The distance between the iPhone and a linked Apple Watch may also be examined by the system. Apple may consider it another indication of theft if the phone abruptly and quickly pulls away from the watch. The iPhone may also determine whether it is in a familiar place, like home or work, or whether it is linked to a reliable Wi-Fi network. The phone may react more violently by preventing access to important areas of the system if it seems like the device has been stolen in an unknown location.

According to the source, the function would probably expand the same safeguards that are already offered by Apple's Stolen Device Protection, which debuted with iOS 17.3. Currently, when the iPhone is away from familiar locations, that function adds additional biometric checks and security delays for operations like changing passwords or accessing stored credentials. However, even with those safeguards, users may still be at risk in the initial moments following a theft.

Do note that Apple has not officially announced the feature or revealed when it may arrive.

The amount of free cloud storage that new users receive with a Google account seems to have altered. 15GB of storage is no longer automatically provided by the firm. Rather, during account formation, some users are apparently only seeing 5GB of free storage, with the opportunity to unlock the full 15GB by associating the account with a phone number.

Users initially noticed the change while creating a new Google account. A Reddit user reports that Google now displays the following notice when creating an account: "Your account includes 5 GB of storage." Get even more storage space for Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos by entering your phone number. After that, users are presented with two choices: "Keep 5 GB storage" or "Unlock 15 GB storage at no cost by using your phone number."

Every Google account comes with 15GB of free storage by default for many years. Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos all share the storage pool. However, the modification implies that phone number verification may now be required for the full 15GB advantage, at least in some circumstances.

Google apparently used the phone number "to make sure storage is added only once per person," according to the setup message. Although the report said that the link was broken when it was viewed, it did go to a help page on Google Account storage management policy.

In addition to the setup modifications, Google is said to have subtly changed the text on a few of its help sites. "Your Google Account comes with 15 GB of cloud storage at no charge," according to an earlier support document. Users now receive "up to 15 GB of cloud storage at no charge," according to the revised text.

Another Google support site outlining how Google storage operates now has the identical language that was initially spotted by 9to5Google. Google hasn't yet made a more comprehensive policy announcement on the distribution of free storage. Additionally, it doesn't make it apparent outside of the account setup process that connecting a phone number could be necessary in order to access the entire 15GB of storage.

"We're testing a new storage policy for new accounts created in select regions that will help us continue to provide a high-quality storage service to our users, while encouraging users to improve their account security and data recovery," the company stated in a statement to Android Authority.

In many instances, however, phone verification is already necessary when registering for a new Google account. According to reports, account creation frequently failed to progress without confirming a phone number during desktop and mobile tests. Nevertheless, there are still some circumstances in which users might be able to register without one, such as when configuring a brand-new Android phone without inserting a SIM card.

Elon Musk was obsessed with trying to control OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company's CEO Sam Altman said Tuesday at a blockbuster trial that saw him spar with lawyers representing the world's wealthiest man.

Altman is the latest in a parade of Silicon Valley megastars to take the stand in the case in which Musk is suing over OpenAI's pivot away from scrappy non-profit into the $850 billion juggernaut behind ChatGPT.

Musk -- the feted, if unpredictable, man behind SpaceX and Tesla -- claims Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman improperly used a $38 million injection he had hoped would sustain OpenAI as a research lab, developing the technology for the good of humanity.

"It does not fit with my conception of the words 'stealing a charity' to look at what has actually happened here," Altman told the court in Oakland, California.

OpenAI was founded as a non-profit in 2015, but established a for-profit subsidiary in 2019 as the AI race heated up.

Altman and others insist this was necessary to raise the vast sums of money from investors, including Microsoft, required to compete in a costly and difficult field.

Musk's legal case demands that OpenAI revert to non-profit status, a move that would impact its position in the global artificial intelligence race against Anthropic, Google and China's Deepseek.

OpenAI counters that Musk -- who is now also a competitor in the field with his xAI -- is motivated by petty revenge, having failed to seize majority control of the commercial entity.

The court has heard how, in 2017, the company's co-founders discussed the creation of the subsidiary with Musk.

Altman said Tuesday that the Tesla boss demanded a huge controlling stake.

"An early number that Mr Musk threw out was that he should have 90 percent of the equity to start," he told the jury.

"It then softened, but it always was a majority."

"The fact that Mr Musk was unwilling to commit in writing to something contractual where he would not have long-term control made me very uncomfortable," said Altman.

He said OpenAI had been founded with the belief that no one person should control artificial general intelligence (AGI), the hypothetical level at which AI is smarter than humans.

When Altman and Brockman thwarted Musk's attempts to dominate the company, the mercurial businessman walked away entirely, telling them the venture would fail without him.

"The thing that burned into my memory is when he told us we had a zero percent -- not one percent -- chance of success," Altman told the hearing.

Money

Musk's lawyers hit back, sparring with Altman over claims he is deceitful.

"Are you completely trustworthy?" Attorney Steven Molo asked. "Do you always tell the truth?"

"I believe I'm a truthful person," a tense Altman replied.

"It wasn't my question, sir," snapped Molo.

Altman was abruptly ousted as head of OpenAI in November 2023, accused of opacity by his own board of directors.

He was reinstated five days later after a company revolt, but has struggled to shrug off a reputation for dishonesty in Silicon Valley.

On Tuesday prosecutors from 10 US states demanded Altman be compelled to reveal potential conflicts of interest ahead of a mooted public offering for OpenAI next year.

Altman "has a history of self-dealing and serious conflicts of interest that have created significant risk for the company," the letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission seen by AFP said.

Musk's case has highlighted the mind-boggling sums of cash washing around AI companies as they forge ahead with a technology that is changing the way we live and work.

That includes the $30 billion stake that Altman's co-founder Greg Brockman was revealed to have in the company.

On Monday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified that he was "very proud" of his firm's canny investment in the commercial venture, which has seen an initial $13 billion become worth more than ten times that amount in just a few years.

An advisory jury is expected to reach a verdict on any actual wrongdoing by the week of May 18.

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers will then make the final ruling on both liability and remedies after hearing the jury's opinion. She has indicated she will likely follow their advice.

(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by Asianet Newsable English staff and is published from a syndicated feed)

We're all constantly online, right? From social media platforms to countless websites, we have accounts everywhere. But have you ever stopped to think about how safe these accounts really are? Are you sure your personal data is secure?

Think of passwords as the locks for your digital life. They are what keep your personal information safe from prying eyes. In a way, passwords are the main security guards of your cyber world.

ALSO READ:

How to create a password that's actually strong?

The problem is, many of us don't know the basics of setting a good password or how often we should be changing it. This is a huge security risk and basically an open invitation for hackers. You could become a victim of cyberattacks, including hacking.

So, how do you create a password that's actually strong? The trick is to mix it all up. When setting a digital password, use a combination of numbers, special characters, letters (both uppercase and lowercase), and even spaces. This will significantly increase the security of your online accounts. Yes, these passwords can be a pain to remember, but making them strong is absolutely essential. If you don't, your online accounts could be hacked, leading to the loss of your valuable information. Also, never use common information like people's names, dates of birth, or mobile numbers as passwords.

Leaks about the impending iPhone 18 Pro Max are already generating excitement online, with only three months until Apple's next iPhone announcement event. Although the current iPhone 17 Pro Max remains one of the most expensive smartphones available, there are suggestions that Apple may include a number of noteworthy improvements in the next Pro Max model. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is said to prioritise performance and economy over a dramatic makeover, with features like a smaller Dynamic Island, longer battery life, a new 2nm CPU, and an enhanced camera system. Here are all the details based on the leaks as we are likely approaching closer to iPhone 18 Pro's launch event.

iPhone 17 Pro Max VS iPhone 18 Pro Max: Display Change

The front display is one of the most anticipated upgrades. According to earlier speculations, Apple may conceal the Face ID technology entirely behind the screen, revealing only a small camera cutout. However, according to more recent reports, Apple would only temporarily relocate one Face ID component behind the display. As a result, consumers could still be able to view the Dynamic Island, but it might get much smaller than it is now on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

It is doubtful that the display's actual size will alter. According to reports, Apple will stick with a 6.3-inch display on the smaller Pro model and the same 6.9-inch panel on the Pro Max variation. Nonetheless, it is said that the business will launch new LTPO+ display technology, which may increase power efficiency and contribute to longer battery life.

iPhone 17 Pro Max VS iPhone 18 Pro Max: Battery

The iPhone 18 Pro Max's battery life could end up being one of its greatest features. Apple could significantly thicken the gadget to accommodate a considerably bigger battery, according to sources. In contrast to the rumoured 4,823mAh battery found in the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the future model is expected to have a 5,100mAh battery. If this is accurate, it would rank among the biggest batteries ever utilised in an iPhone. The drawback is that it may weigh more than 240 grams, which might make it the heaviest iPhone that Apple has ever made.

iPhone 17 Pro Max VS iPhone 18 Pro Max: Camera Improvements

Improvements to the camera are also anticipated. There are rumours that the 48-megapixel Fusion camera on the iPhone 18 Pro Max will include a variable aperture system. By enabling users to manually adjust the quantity of light entering the sensor, this might improve low-light photography and help produce greater depth effects. Additionally, Apple is reportedly streamlining the Camera Control button by eliminating haptic feedback and touch sensitivity, leaving solely pressure-based functions.

iPhone 17 Pro Max VS iPhone 18 Pro Max: Colours and Price

This year, colour possibilities could also alter. Dark cherry is predicted to be the iPhone 18 Pro Max's unique characteristic hue. Additionally, Light Blue, Dark Grey, and Silver versions are anticipated to be available from Apple. According to reports, the iPhone 17 Pro Max's Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue finishes could be discontinued.

In India, the iPhone 17 Pro Pro is now priced at Rs 1,34,900, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max is priced at Rs 1,49,900. If the reports are true, Apple may keep the iPhone 18 Pro series' pricing structure the same, with only a little increase if needed. According to another analyst, Jeff Pu, Apple could pursue an aggressive price approach in order to maintain the devices' competitiveness in important areas like India.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro series in September alongside a foldable iPhone. The company may later introduce the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and second-generation iPhone Air models early next year.

Instagram has launched 'Instants', a new feature for sharing temporary, unfiltered photos with friends. These photos, taken with the in-app camera, vanish after being viewed and can only be shared with mutual followers or Close Friends, promoting spontaneous interaction.

'Instants' is a new feature on Instagram that gives users a new method to instantly share vanishing photographs with friends. The goal of the function, which Meta introduced worldwide, is to make photo sharing more informal, private, and impromptu. Instants enables users to communicate brief images via Instagram's direct chat feature. After being seen, these images vanish and automatically expire after 24 hours. Instants may only be shared by users with their mutual followers or Close Friends list.

In contrast to standard Instagram Stories or posts, Instants are intended to be unprocessed and raw, according to a Meta blog post. Photos cannot be uploaded from the phone gallery; instead, they must be taken with the in-app camera. Although stickers, filters, and editing tools are not provided, users can add subtitles.

According to Meta, the function is meant to promote genuine sharing without the need to produce polished material. In certain nations, the business has also released a stand-alone Instants app that allows users to use the camera more quickly while still being connected to Instagram accounts.

When a friend receives an Instant, they may respond with direct messages, send Instants back, and react with emojis. Photos that are shared can be converted into Story Summaries after being discreetly stored in the sender's archive for a maximum of one year.

Because of its ephemeral structure and emphasis on unfiltered sharing, the function has been compared to BeReal and Snapchat. Instagram was attacked by some users for introducing yet another feature to an already crowded service, while others praised the informal approach.

Features That Simplify Sharing with Friends

Archive: For a maximum of one year, shared instances are stored in a private archive that is only accessible by you. It is accessible via the Instants section's upper-right corner.

Recap to Stories: Create a recap by compiling Instants from your archive, then select Create Recap to upload it to Stories.

No screenshots: The Instants you post cannot be recorded or captured by friends.

Undo: Sending an Instant by mistake? Retract it before viewing by using the undo button. To stop sending it to those who haven't yet opened it, you may also remove it from your archive.

Snooze: Press and hold the Instants section in your inbox and swipe right to temporarily stop receiving them. Swipe left to restore them.

New Delhi: In a quietly historic moment, Tata Electronics and Netherlands major ASML have inked an agreement to power India’s first front-end semiconductor fabrication facility at Dholera in Gujarat. The agreement signing ceremony was witnessed by the prime minister, Narendra Modi and his counterpart from Netherlands — Rob Jetten.

For Tata Electronics, a subsidiary of the storied Tata Grou will be building a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Dholera, a greenfield smart city.

For ASML, the Dutch multinational that virtually monopolises the supply of high-precision lithography machines — the equipment that “prints” circuits onto silicon wafers — it marks a significant entry into one of the world’s fastest-growing markets.

The backdrop matters

India has long been a consumer, not a maker, of semiconductors. Despite having a world-class chip design talent pool, the country has had no front-end fabrication capacity — the complex, capital-intensive process of actually manufacturing chips. That gap became painfully visible during the 2021-22 global chip shortage, which choked India’s automotive and electronics industries.

In response, the Indian government launched the India Semiconductor Mission in 2021, offering incentives worth billions to attract fab investments.

Tata’s Dholera plant — and now the ASML partnership to supply its critical lithography equipment — is the most consequential outcome of that policy push so far.

“Prime Minister Modi highlighted the partnership as an important step in India’s journey for developing a semiconductor ecosystem in the country,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

Netherlands is one of India's largest trade destinations in Europe, with bilateral trade worth USD 27.8 billion (2024-25); and India's 4th largest investor with cumulative FDI of USD 55.6 billion.

This move signifies a shift in Meta's revenue strategy, now incorporating monthly payments for enhanced social media experiences beyond its ad-based model.

Meta is getting ready to transform how users interact with Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. For customers worldwide, including in India, the firm has launched new premium membership options with unique benefits. Meta is releasing "Plus" versions of its applications, which provide paying customers access to features and personalization choices that are not available to normal users.

The action shows that Meta is no longer only dependent on advertisements to generate income. Rather, it now requires users to pay on a monthly basis for sophisticated messaging tools, more exposure, and premium social media experiences.

Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are priced at $3.99 (around Rs 387) per month, while WhatsApp Plus costs $2.99 (around Rs 290) per month. However, Meta has not yet revealed the exact India pricing.

Advanced Tools and Profile Customisation to Instagram

Instagram Plus customers will be able to create infinite Story audience lists outside of the Close Friends function, monitor how many people have rewatched their Stories, and even preview Stories covertly without showing up in the viewer list, according to a TechCrunch report.

Additionally, the plan enables users to highlight one Story each week for increased visibility and prolong Stories beyond the standard 24-hour restriction. Another intriguing feature allows users to publish straight to their profile and highlights without showing up in followers' feeds, as well as check their list of Story viewers to see who is watching.

Fun cosmetic enhancements are also being added by Meta. Users of Instagram Plus will receive additional profile pins, unique app icons, unique fonts for bios, and animated "Super Heart" reactions.

WhatsApp Gets Messaging Personalisation

While WhatsApp Plus is concentrating on messaging customisation, Facebook Plus is anticipated to provide comparable functionality. Custom themes, original ringtones, premium stickers, more pinned chats, and sophisticated list customisation options will all be available to WhatsApp users.

Meta's head of product, Naomi Gleit, hinted to the company's future intentions to introduce "more fun features" in an Instagram statement.

Additionally, Meta has made it clear that these new subscriptions are distinct from Meta Verified, its current paid verification service that provides customer assistance, identity verification, and security against impersonation.

Meanwhile, Meta’s subscription ambitions go beyond social media apps. The company has also introduced “Meta One,” which includes AI, creator and business-focused plans. The new Meta AI subscriptions will come in two tiers. The first plan, called Meta One Plus, will cost $7.99 (around Rs 775) per month and is aimed at people who frequently use Meta AI for generating images, creating videos or handling longer reasoning tasks. A more expensive Meta One Premium plan will cost $19.99 (around Rs 1,939) per month and offer the same features but with much higher usage limits.

Delhi-NCR briefly received relief from duststorms and light rain on May 23, but temperatures quickly climbed back to 41°C-43°C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that severe heatwave conditions will continue across large parts of Central and Northwest India for the next seven days. Eastern and nearby Peninsular India are also expected to face intense heat for the next three to five days. However, temperatures may begin to fall slightly from May 29 onwards.

Weather experts and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have warned that several states could see temperatures between 45°C and 49°C over the coming days.

Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand and Telangana are among the regions likely to face heatwave conditions. Severe heatwave conditions are especially expected in parts of West Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha till May 27 or 28. Warm nights are also likely in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha, making conditions more uncomfortable.

The extreme heat has affected daily life across many regions, especially in cities where roads, buildings and concrete structures are trapping heat even during the night.

In South India, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema are likely to witness rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds till May 30. Kerala and Lakshadweep may receive heavy rainfall during May 24-28. Strong winds reaching up to 70 kmph are also possible in Rayalaseema and North Interior Karnataka.

Eastern states including West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha are also likely to receive thunderstorms and gusty winds. Duststorms are also likely in isolated areas of Rajasthan.

The IMD said temperatures are expected to remain high across most parts of the country till May 28, before gradually reducing by 2°C to 5°C in several regions by May 29 and 30.

At the same time, several states are expected to receive heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. In Northeast India, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to receive widespread rain over the next few days.

IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places in Assam and Meghalaya on May 24, while Arunachal Pradesh may also receive very heavy rain on May 24 and 25.

According to forecasts, the hottest conditions over the next few days are expected in West Rajasthan, Southwest Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

These areas may continue to record temperatures between 45°C and 48°C for several days.

Observed Maximum Temperature (>=45 Deg C) at different stations across the country pic.twitter.com/pTBvsZK6Qu

— India Meteorological Department (@Indiametdept) May 24, 2026

Heatwave Alert Across India ️Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are expected to persist over Central & Northwest India during the next 7 days, and over East & adjoining Peninsular India for the next 3–5 days. By afternoon, temperatures once again climbed sharply and reached around 41°C to 43°C in many areas.

Weather experts say the short rain and duststorm only reduced temperatures for a few hours and did not change the larger weather system affecting the region.

Why temperatures are rising so sharply

Experts say the current heatwave is being driven by two major reasons. The first is the absence of strong atmospheric cooling systems. The second is the usual pre-monsoon heat build-up that develops across north and central India during late May.

Ground weather observations and forecast models from the India Meteorological Department’s Global Forecast System show that the main heat zone is expanding across several states.

Between May 25 and May 30, another stronger phase of the heatwave is expected to develop. During this period, maximum temperatures may rise to between 45°C and 49°C across many northern and central plains.

In a fresh update shared on X on May 24, the IMD said temperatures are already running much higher than normal in many regions.

The department reported that temperatures were “markedly above normal”, meaning more than 5.1°C higher than average, at isolated places in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.

Temperatures were described as “appreciably above normal”, or 3.1°C to 5°C above average, at many places in East Uttar Pradesh. Similar conditions were also recorded in parts of Jharkhand and Vidarbha.

The IMD also said isolated areas in Odisha, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, West Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana were seeing temperatures significantly above normal levels.

Punjab recorded temperatures that were 1.6°C to 3°C above average at many places, while several southern and island regions remained close to normal.

Apart from the weather system itself, many cities are also dealing with what experts call the “urban heat island effect”.

This happens when buildings, roads, glass surfaces and concrete structures absorb heat during the day and slowly release it at night. As a result, cities remain warmer than nearby rural areas even after dark.

This can make nights uncomfortable and increase health risks, especially for elderly people, children and outdoor workers who do not get enough cooling time.

Weather experts believe some relief may arrive toward the end of May.

A stronger Western Disturbance is expected to move into northern India around that time. Western Disturbances are extra-tropical storms that usually originate near the Mediterranean region and move eastwards towards India.

The system could trigger widespread thunderstorms, gusty winds and rainfall in several northern states, helping temperatures fall gradually.

Until then, experts are advising people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during afternoon hours and reduce outdoor activity whenever possible.

Health officials also recommend drinking enough water, wearing light cotton clothes and checking on elderly family members during extreme heat conditions.

Researchers at the University of Sharjah have developed a new earthquake damper that works without electricity. Designed by professor Moussa Leblouba, the device uses steel balls, rods and friction to absorb vibration energy during earthquakes.

Earthquakes can strike without warning. In many cases, power cuts happen at the same time, making rescue work and safety systems even harder to manage. Now, a newly patented device developed by researchers at University of Sharjah in United Arab Emirates is offering a simple but promising way to reduce earthquake damage without using electricity.

The invention was designed by civil engineering professor Moussa Leblouba, as mentioned in Science Direct study. At first look, the device appears very basic. It is mainly made from a hollow steel cylinder filled with solid steel balls and crossed by a moving shaft with short rods attached to it.

But researchers say this simple design could help reduce shaking in buildings, bridges and sensitive equipment during earthquakes and other powerful vibrations.

The idea has already received a United States patent in December 2025, placing the design officially on record.

The system works through movement and friction rather than electronics or powered machines.

When a building shakes during an earthquake, the shaft inside the cylinder moves back and forth. As it moves, the attached rods push through the tightly packed steel balls inside the cylinder.

That movement creates friction between the rods and the balls. According to researchers, this friction converts some of the vibration energy into heat. Because part of the energy is absorbed inside the damper, less force travels through the building itself.

Professor Leblouba explained the process in simple terms.

“The friction generated between the balls and the rods absorbs and dissipates the vibration energy,” he said.

This means the building or structure experiences weaker and slower movement during shaking.

One of the biggest advantages of the system is that it works without electricity.

Many earthquake protection systems depend on pumps, electronics, fluid compression or metal parts that bend under stress. Such systems can sometimes fail during blackouts or require costly maintenance.

But this new design is completely passive. It relies only on physical movement and friction.

“Our device needs no power at all; it works through pure physics, through friction; it is passive,” Leblouba said.

That feature could become extremely important during large earthquakes when electricity networks often fail within seconds.

Even if some parts get damaged, engineers say individual components can be replaced without changing the entire system.

Early laboratory testing has produced encouraging results.

Researchers said the device was able to absorb around 14% of vibration energy that would otherwise pass through a structure. This is known as the damping ratio, which measures how quickly shaking reduces over time.

During tests involving small movements between 1 and 5 millimetres, the system also generated around 28,500 pounds of resisting force for each inch moved.

These results suggest the device may significantly reduce vibration and structural stress.

However, scientists also stressed that these were still early-stage tests using small motions. Large real-world earthquakes create much stronger and more unpredictable forces.

Because of this, more advanced testing is still needed before the technology can be widely used.

The device may be especially useful for retrofitting older buildings.

Many older structures were not designed using modern earthquake safety standards. Upgrading them is often difficult and expensive.

Traditional earthquake protection methods such as base isolators usually require major structural changes under buildings. In comparison, compact dampers like this can often be added more easily.

Researchers believe bridges, towers, framed structures and equipment racks could become early users of the technology.

This could allow engineers to strengthen older infrastructure without completely rebuilding it.

Although earthquakes are the main focus, the device could also help control many other forms of vibration.

Strong winds, railway movement, industrial machinery and repeated shocks can all damage structures over time. Sensitive equipment such as communication systems and laboratory instruments also suffer from continuous vibration.

Because the system absorbs energy through friction, it may help reduce movement in all these situations as well.

Researchers say a technology that works across many industries usually becomes more affordable and practical because development costs can be shared across different sectors.

Part of a larger research effort

The steel-ball cylinder did not appear suddenly.

Professor Leblouba’s research team has already spent years studying particle-filled dampers.

In an earlier published study, the same group tested a box-shaped damper filled mainly with sand. That system also used particle movement to absorb energy.

The newly patented design changes the shape and materials by using steel balls and a moving rod system, but the basic idea remains the same: simple particles can absorb dangerous vibration energy.

Researchers say this shows the project is part of a long-term scientific effort rather than a one-time experiment.

Why simple designs matter

One reason experts are interested in the device is its simplicity.

The system mainly uses a cylinder, steel balls, rods and a moving shaft. These are common industrial materials that can potentially be assembled and repaired locally.

That matters especially in countries with high earthquake risk and limited financial resources.

After major earthquakes, repairing damaged safety systems often becomes extremely expensive. A device with replaceable parts may reduce both installation and repair costs.

Simple systems also usually require less specialised maintenance.

For developing countries facing regular earthquakes, affordability can become just as important as performance.

Bigger tests are still needed

Despite the positive early results, researchers say the device still needs much larger testing.

The next step will involve shake-table experiments. These tests recreate earthquake conditions using moving platforms that simulate real ground motion.

Scientists plan to attach the damper to scaled structures and expose them to stronger and more complex shaking.

Researchers also want to study how changing the rod shape, spacing, steel ball size and ball material affects performance.

Only after these larger experiments will engineers fully understand how well the system performs during severe earthquakes.

Earthquakes happen when energy suddenly releases inside the Earth's crust. The most common reason is the movement of tectonic plates. The Earth’s surface is made of giant rock plates that slowly move over time. These plates often get stuck along faults because of friction. Pressure keeps building until the rocks suddenly break or slip, releasing energy as seismic waves. There are several types of earthquakes.

Tectonic earthquakes

These are the most common worldwide. They happen when tectonic plates collide, separate or slide past each other.

Volcanic earthquakes

Volcanic activity can also trigger earthquakes. Pressure from moving magma and ash beneath the surface creates shaking before or during eruptions.

Human-induced earthquakes

Some earthquakes are linked to human activities such as hydraulic fracturing, geothermal projects, tunnel construction and large reservoirs behind dams.

Collapse earthquakes

Small local earthquakes can happen when underground caves or mine roofs collapse.

Explosion-related earthquakes

Powerful explosions, including nuclear tests, can also create seismic activity.

Future of earthquake safety

Experts say earthquake protection systems are becoming more important as cities grow larger and infrastructure becomes more complex.

A low-cost device that works without electricity could become valuable in many parts of the world, especially in regions where earthquakes and power failures often happen together.

While the new system still needs further testing, early results suggest that simple mechanical designs may offer practical solutions for improving safety during natural disasters.

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked concerns about job security and the future of work. However, new research from the University of Vaasa suggests that AI can actually help workers become more motivated and adaptable in their careers when they view it as a useful tool rather than a threat.

Researcher Zhe Zhu studied how generative AI systems like ChatGPT and Gemini are changing modern workplaces. His doctoral research looked into the impact of AI on company decision-making and how employees experience these technologies in their daily tasks.

Many workers are worried that AI might reduce their value at work or make their skills irrelevant. Yet, Zhu’s findings show that these worries can sometimes push people to improve their abilities and learn how to use AI tools more effectively, helping them remain competitive in their jobs.

Also read: Is ChatGPT Changing How We Think? MIT, Stanford Study Raises Red Flags

Trust Balance

The research found that trust in AI is a key factor in whether the technology benefits the workplace. Employees who rely too much on AI may accept wrong information without verifying it. In contrast, workers who completely avoid AI might miss chances to enhance their performance and efficiency.

Zhu explained that as AI becomes more common in daily tasks, businesses need to maintain a careful balance. Companies must encourage employees to use AI in a thoughtful and responsible way rather than depending on it without question.

Smarter Adoption

The study also found that successful AI integration depends more on company strategy than on the technology itself. Organizations must address issues such as ethics, privacy, and responsible data use when introducing AI systems.

According to Zhu, businesses should follow a clear long-term plan that aligns AI with organizational goals and promotes collaboration with industry and academic partners. His research proposes an eight-step framework to help companies move from experimenting with AI to using it in a more meaningful and organized way.

Future Industries

Zhu believes that workplaces are becoming increasingly AI-native, where AI systems are fully integrated into daily processes rather than being used as separate tools. The research also suggests that while some jobs may disappear, AI is likely to create new industries and career opportunities related to data centres, AI infrastructure, and digital services.

The study argues that instead of fearing AI, employees should focus on learning how to work with it and continue developing their skills for the future.

Also read: ‘Godfather of AI’ Geoffrey Hinton Raises Alarm Over AI Risks, Urges Strong Global Regulation

Indian users of Apple Watches and AirPods Pro will now have access to some of Apple's potent health features. The brand has announced that one of its most significant markets is now able to use the company's portfolio of health-centric technologies, which has grown in recent years. The first is sleep apnoea, which debuted a few years ago with the Apple Watch Series 10 model. The second is that you may use AirPods Pro to test your hearing without always seeing a doctor. Let's examine these two health enhancements in more detail, as well as the benefits they provide to consumers.

Sleep Apnoea Comes to Indian Users

According to Apple, a large data set of clinical-grade sleep apnoea tests and sophisticated machine learning were used in the development of the sleep notification system. According to Apple, the accelerometer is used in the breathing disturbances metric to identify minute movements at the wrist that are linked to disruptions in regular breathing patterns during sleep. If the accelerometer consistently displays indicators of moderate to severe sleep apnoea, users will be notified.

The cutting-edge breathing disturbances meter will monitor users' sleep, assess their sleep patterns, and alert them if they have an apnoea, a dangerous sleep condition in which breathing frequently stops and begins. However, Apple claims that the function would encourage consumers to obtain a professional diagnosis rather than serving as a diagnostic tool. For further help, you may even download the device's data in PDF format from the Health app and send it to the physician.

Hearing To Get Better

The hearing test offered by AirPods Pro to Indian consumers is the other significant innovation. According to the firm, these tests are expert-recommended and clinically authorised. The test may be completed in around five minutes by wearing the AirPods Pro and pairing them with an iPhone or iPad.

Users will receive a thorough overview of the results that indicates whether they now have hearing loss or are at risk of developing it in the near future. The Health app stores all the data, which may be shared with medical professionals for improved guidance and care if necessary.
